Looking to regear my Rubicon with 37's and a 3.5in lift. Contacted a local shop that I know is a little more expensive but does solid work. Going with 4.88 gears and also having them add .5 inch spacers to my lift. The quote came in and I feel that its a little too high, any thoughts?

Was expecting to pay closer to $2200 or so. I know that prices on everything are up so if this is what it costs now for solid work, so be it, just don't want to get screwed

If I remember right, I think my regear was around $800 in labor

The labor might be a little high from my experience but not dramatically so. And that could vary based on location. You're going to be changing the fluid after the 500 mile break in, so it's crazy to put high quality synthetic in it until after that.

I've been quoted higher than yours. At one place, quote a bit higher. It pays to shop around if you have the option. I'd be sure they are good before I try to save a couple hundred and deal with the pain of a bad install though.

Yep--too high + Revolution gears and what is Wildside Full Synthetic lubricant?

Also, if you have a 3.6L, you should be looking at 5.13 gears, if a 2.0T all good.

My thoughts exactly. I'd happily pay a couple hundred bucks extra to ensure good work, but not if it is closer to $1000

I do have a 2.0T, the shop is called Wildside Jeeps so that would be their shit

I would not use "unknown" gear oil for break-in. It may indeed be fine, but given the cost of the overall job versus the cost of gear oil and how important initial break-in is, why gamble?

There a few yellow flags in the quote including the cost that would have me continuing my search.

That makes it even worse. They're charging you $20/quart for some non brand name stuff. You can get Royal Purple or Amsoil for about the same price.

$2900 looks competitive here in PHX market. Some are higher, some lower. I'd as suggested, get some more quotes to be safe. That said if the shop is reputable and comes highly recommended, it's probably worth spending a bit extra for something like a gear installation. You really want to minimize risk as much as possible there. $2200 seems TOO low though. That's around what I paid in 2009.

There's a lot of regional variation.

In the major urban areas top shops can command top rates.

You're paying for a "no drama" install here. No,

"Hey, it didn't used to be this noisy"
"That's normal, bro, I don't hear anything."
"No look, I made a video and showed it to a bunch of guys on JLWranglerForum and they all agree it's not normal."
"Give it a few hundred miles for the gears to 'break in'"
"Man, it's *still* doing it."
"OK, Fine, I'll take a look. (comes back) ... It's not bad bro. You're overreacting. Just turn up the radio a little"

Here's what I'd expect if I pay that much
1. The job's done right and I don't have any probs or increase in noise from the diffs
2. If there *is* a noisy diff, the shop takes care of it with no drama and at no charge.

Does the reputation of the shop you're working with inspire that confidence?

Last Februrary, I paid $2,200 for 4.88 regearing parts and labor to a 4x4 shop in the Western US that is a well-known sponsor on here. It was the lowest quote I got.

The work and the service were excellent.
