Since I will be driving 1,000 miles there and 1,000 miles back, I asked about breaking-in. The person at Northridge 4X4 was very helpful; he explained that the gears are very tight at first, so there is a specific breaking-in procedure:
  1. Drive 15 miles and stop the engine; let the gears cool down for a few minutes. Drive again for 15 miles. Repeat this for the first 100 miles
  2. After that, they said to drive continuously but stopping every hour or so to let the gears cool down. Do this for the next 500 miles
  3. Make sure to replace the fluid after 1,000 miles
That's it.
Glad you found a solution. I'll be interested to hear how things go. Best of luck and enjoy your road trip.

Ha! No idea. Yukon would be my guess; that’s the most prominent on Northridge’s website.
I would be adamant that they use Dana Spicer gears. Yukon has been having issues with QC for quite a while now.

That is correct. If you need perfection go with Spicer. I just had Yukon installed, and they are great, but I do have a slight gear whine at 55 MPH. It doesn't bother me in the least, especially since I always have my SOT open. But it isn't perfect!

Whine means they were not set up properly, which isn't surprising with Yukons. They sometimes take a ton of patience and trial and error to get setup properly. Most shops don't put in the time to get them perfect (or as close to perfect as the sometimes horrible run-out allows).

Northridge 4X4 warned me that the gears would be VERY tight at first.

Hopefully the whine goes away with wear.

I'll have to check if I still have it since I never have the Jeep closed up! I sure Love the new gears! The jeep is so responsive! Very fun to drive!

Yes, when properly set-up, the gears will be tight, BUT there should be no whine.

As far as the break-in procedure, you want to have a series of heat and cool periods, however you don't have to be a super stickler to the 15 miles run and 15 minutes cool down.

The mechanics will have already done a test drive with the vehicle to check for a whine, so they've started the process already.

Then once you get on the highway headed back home, get it up to speed and drive approximately 15 mins/miles, stop at a scenic lookout for the view or gas station to fuel up, grab a snack etc.

Then repeat.

Don't worry about hitting those numbers exactly, get to the next offramp, rest stop, fuel station or whatever. You don't have to sit alongside the Interstate waiting for 15 mins.

Just make sure that you get in 5-6 heat up and cool down cycles, each one can be a little longer than the one before it.

Same with the oil change. Don't have to worry about changing it exactly at 1,000 miles, if you end up going 1,200 miles before getting home, that's fine. Just get it changed around that 1,000 mile window.

Also, you don't want to be carrying heavy loads or towing for the first 1,000 miles.

Might be able to find some take off 4:10s cheap. They're fine for 35s and based on your threads, I don't think 37s are in your future anyway. D
I agree, and 410s come up from time to time. I’ll have a set with less than 10,000 miles on them as soon as I can arrange my regear.

Hey guys. I got COVID ten days ago; I had to postpone my regearing appointment to next week. I am scheduled to get it done Monday-Tuesday. I shall be able to offer my impressions after that.

Cheers,

Aldo

PS - I’m booked to get 4.88 gears; I’ll see if I can get 4.56 instead.

More to come...

PS2 - today I drove 500 miles from Bellingham WA to Baker City, OR: I averaged 12.7 MPG...at 70-75 MPH...!

That’s just pathetic....
