This week I tried to downsize from 35s to 33s to restore some of the original driveability, regain use of all gears on the 8-speed automatic, and recover from the paltry 13 MPG I’m getting now back up to the high teens.

I recalibrated the speedo using a Tazer: the Jeep drives fine but the auto transmission doesn’t shift into 8th gear any more, and rarely into 7th.

The tires in the sizes I want are hard to find, and the shops want an arm-and-a-leg for smaller 33-inch tires. I was quoted $2,100 today for five 33-inch KO2s; it’s just not worth it. For that kind of money I might as well look into regearing.

I’ve seen the charts floating out there, but I’m not clear if I should be looking at 3.73, 4.10 or 4.56.

I’m not looking for a crawl monster; I simply want to be able to regain the use of all 8 gears in the transmission and recover some fuel economy.

Let me know what you think and don’t forget to vote.

Thanks.

I voted for 4.56, but I’d say you could also split the difference and go with 4.30s. But the real world difference between the two is negligible.

Might be able to find some take off 4:10s cheap. They're fine for 35s and based on your threads, I don't think 37s are in your future anyway. D
I hadn’t considered buying takeoff gears. I’ll look into it.

Yeah, no 37s for me.

If you are looking to re-gear, go with 4.56 for 35" you will be disappointed with 4.10 and you will not see 8th gear much. If you are expecting great gains in gas mileage, that is not a realistic expectation, you may gain something but not guaranteed.

I'd go 4.56 just like the XR package.

4.10s would definitely be a step up from the 3.45s, but since there is probably little to no cost difference, you may as well step up to the 4.56s.

You can have mine in January when I get my new gears… but I agree that you should go 4.56 like the XR has

FYI: Shops won't warranty anything with used gears. Many shops won't even install them.

There's no way for them to really know the history of the gears. And they can wear prematurely if you don't get them set up the same as when they came out.

It's usually not worth it to install used gears.

Valid point.

Theres no point buying takeoff gears. New ones arent thaaaat expensive. Just do it the right way and get 4.56s. but dont do it for MPGs. If you truly want better MPG get smaller tires

That might be the most insight-packed post right here.

Someone on another forum kindly shared this chart:

Jeep Wrangler JL Recommended gearing for Sahara V6 with 3.45 gears on 35s with a rear D44 55F06F82-7EFC-4EA8-A85B-919CBCD76A09

It appears my automatic transmission doesn’t shift into 7th or 8th gears because engine speed is dropping down to 1,500 RPMs, which is too low to sustain 70.

According to the chart, I should aim to be right at around 1,700 at 70 MPH. Which means 4.10 would be the “ideal” gearing ratio for my setup.

4.56 would keep the engine at above 2,000 RPMs, which perhaps explains why XR owners are seeing 15-17 MPG.

Remember that the Rubs have 4.10s on the stock 33s, which according to your chart puts the target at 1959 rpm. The 4.56s would be closer to stock Rubicon performance for you.
