I have replaced my plastic bumper with a westin wj2 steel bumper and had to drill out the spots for the rear sensors. I have been reading and see that there are lots of issues. but i have a few questions if anyone can help clarify some points:

1. do the sensors need to go in the same spot as the original bumper? some say yes, some say it is the holders that are key as they angle them properly.

2. do the sensors need to go oriented the same way as they were in the original bumper? (or can they be rotated slightly) My westin bumper is very tight fit for the center two sensors and i need to rotate them slightly from how they were sitting in the plastic bumper in order for the wiring to reach.

i feel like i should just scrap the whole holders and maybe just glue them in place--using the OEM metal bumper holders really does not help as the angles they make the sensors sit in does not work for two of them. For the other sensors, the holders work great, but the sensors are not rotated exactly as they were in the original bumper.

Take detailed measurements of where they are in your existing bumper. Make a bumper template of the sensor locations from the old bumper, place that over the new bumper, reconfirm your measurements and markings, secure the template in place and drill thru. Drilling thru is not to be done until you’re confident that everything done is correct and where you would like your sensors to be.

The sensors are proximity and use sonar (?) waves to detect objects. Some of the earliest JL’s produced were incorrectly set/calibrated from the factory. The fix was to rotate and reposition the sensors. Keep us updated.

I just went out and messed with my rear park sensors after switching to a steel GoRhino bumper two years ago and keeping the sensors off because my bike rack defeated them. Removed the rack. Looked at my wife’s plastic Sahara bumper sensors and the middle two should have a slight downward angle on the face of the bumper. The plugs for the middle two should both be towards the driver side. Mine were not and two years ago I spent hours messing with them to no avail. I’d say that on flat ground they don’t beep unless there’s a decent root/frost heave in the road or something closer/bigger. My outside sensors are slightly tilted toward an outward angle with the plug side on each on the outside as well for both. A factory Sahara has both outer sensor plugs facing the inside toward the trailer hitch. Mine pick up the same range and objects as the wife’s factory sensors in the plastic bumper. None of the sensors have the plug side up or down inside the bumper.

Thank you for this info. I installed a Westin WJ2 full width bumper with sensors a few days ago. Now my sensors are hit and miss. Sometimes they work and sometimes they dont. I'll start it, back out of the driveway and they work. Start pulling forward and I get the warning they're not working. After looking at it, one of my middle plugs is facing slightly upwards. I'll readjust it tomorrow if I can. Though the bumper is made and the location of the sensors, I may have to take the whole bumper off. Im worried the sensors are slightly higher on the Westin than the stock plastic bumper and my spare tire is triggering this issue. Ive got the Mopar spare tire relocation bracket and reinforcement, and it doesnt appear it can be adjusted off for height.

Hoping to revive this and get some help/answers. I'm having similar hit and miss sensor issues after swapping the OEM plastic bumper for a steel Smittybuilt. Has anyone found a "fix" for OEM sensors in an aftermarket steel bumper?

Did you ever find the answer to your question (shown above)? I have a 2020 Jeep Wrangler JL. Putting on a steel bumper to replace the factory bumper. I successfully removed all (4) sensors and respective parts; however, my organization/

order of the sensors themselves got mixed up (as far as: far left, center left, center right, far right). Are the sensors themselves interchangeable? Can they go in any of the sensor locations on the bumper?

What did you find out?
