Really though, the stock 3.6L Pentastar in the JL, with its bumped up compression from the JK, SHOULD be running premium as-is. I ran a tank of 93 through my bone stock Pentastar and it ran noticeably better. No more detonation, less stumbling at low RPM, and just an all around smoother running engine. Went back to 87, and all those previous little buggers showed back up.

I made a rough estimate that, at $0.50/gal more expensive (which it's been closer to $0.70/gal lately but I wanted to be conservative) and averaging 16mpg, it would take about 32,000 miles to spend an extra $1000 on fuel. I ran down this line of thought because I thought that, if the Livernois tuning alone on the 87 tune can work out many of these bugs, it would pay for itself with a better driving experience after 32,000 miles. But, with the compression ratio of these engines being over 11:1 now, I'm not sure what tuning can really do to work out all the detonation and stumbling and rough low-RPM running while still running 87 octane (and most who get the tune crank it up to the 93 or E85 tunes because horsepower).

Anyway, just a thought. If I weren't unemployed (ahem, I mean self-funded), I'd probably have already ordered a Maggie blower kit and had Livernois set up the tuning and just commit to the $3k extra fuel spend over the next 100k miles.
Have yet to hear a single ping using 87. guess it depends on the area where you live and purchase gas.

My Jeep has gotten gas in 10 different states thus far and has pinged at low RPM on 87 (or 89) gas from every one of them. Do you have an automatic transmission? It seems to me the manual guys seem to notice the poor tuning a bit more than the folks with autos. I would guess it’s a product of the manual folks being more in-touch with the system and the auto hiding some of the ugly spots in the tune.

EDIT: all fuel I’ve purchased has been top tier, nearly exclusively Exxon and Chevron (being a somewhat disgruntled former RDS employee haha).

I ran 87 for a year in a six speed and never noticed pinging, all northern Virginia.

6 speed here as well and I pinged so much on 87, I could have been in a band! I only usually get gas from Shell or Chevron. Doesn't matter the time of year here in Houston, summer or winter, it'll ping on anything other than 93. Because of that, I only run 93 or E85 now and I'm ping free (I'm also tuned from Livernois to run the E85).

I have the auto. seems like it doesnt matter reading the other posts. Some do some dont. If I had to run premium I'd probably try and find the issue or sell the vehicle. That's just me though.

I tell people that my JLUR is like a Ferrari. I wash it, drive it, and look at it while smiling. Just like I would a Ferrari. Not a Ferrari, just like a Ferrari. LOL.
Well, it's not broken like a Ferrari =)

Wow, that's crazy. I have never pinged on 87 w/ my 2.0. I do run premium because of the heat and consistently driving up north through the mountains, but when I was running 87 initially I had no issue. I stick to Shell or Chevron as well if possible, but I've certainly filled up other places (Walmart included).

I have 6k miles on it - so 2500 more On the Sc. The tires are much firmer than stock , still smoother than my prev JK. Same gas milage on what feels like 40% more power. Its a great ride and I find my self taking it out more frequently than a pair of Ferraris I have parked next to it.
I must add the performance is greatly improved if i turn off traction control.

I am running 93 octane. Never a problem. Also royalpurple oil.

2019 3.6 here. I run 87 octane all the time and never noticed any pinging at all. Mine currently has 7k+ miles.

On almost any stock engine, if you bump the compression by decreasing the squish clearance (say, going from 0.050" to 0.035"), you often actually INCREASE the octane tolerance of the engine. It causes the mixture to burn more evenly and the added combustion chamber turbulence at TDC cools the charge. I suspect this is exactly what they did with this engine, and why they rate it for 87 octane, and also why it gets better fuel mileage than the previous version.

On the other hand, when you start adding forced induction, things are very different. Watching all the threads here on 3.6l forced induction, I believe there are two factors that the companies are having trouble dealing with: the higher CR of this engine, and the tuning of the newer and more complex computer they use with this engine. When the bugs are gone, I'll be in the market for one.

Can our ZF transmission handle that much extra HP? what about the valve train, driveshaft, pistons, connecting rods etc. Anyone know the limits of the internals? Or the fuel system for that matter. Not saying it can't I am just curious.
Am at 16k miles on this Rubi - no problems. The boost is small - 6psi. It drives better w the traction control off - for some reason seems to chg the engine mgmt.
