I have decided to make a thread to capture and document the build and adventure throughout the time to come in this life of Jeep.

We as a family have been into Jeeps since the 90’s. Both my sisters, my brother, and brother in-law all have wranglers.

In Feb 2018 I placed an order for our first JL rubicon in Granite crystal metallic with a manual of course. All my vehicles have been manuals and wanted to be able to teach my daughter how to drive a manual for several reasons. One, I really believe it makes you a better driver as you are more focused on driving.

Well After a year and a half of enjoying the Jeep we put over 38,000 miles on it and we decided to trade it in on a 2020 Rubicon. My wife and daughter both decided they just don’t like driving a manual as much as I enjoy them so we ordered an 8spd Auto in Stingray. After about 22days later it was ready to pick up.

I pulled the stock wheels and tires and sold them locally. Without a lift on a stock Rubicon, I then mounted the 37” ridge grapplers and JK version AEV wheels I kept from my last JL.

At this ride height and the 37’s it did not rub at all on the road, but at this point I didn’t have the 37” tire mounted for the spare yet. If the spare had been mounted it would have rubbed the back of the rear fender liner going over transition sections at highway speeds if I had passengers.

After a couple of weeks of the 37’s mounted, I couldn’t take riding around without the spare tire on. I hate the look of it. When I first got the JL in 2018, there wasn’t much out on the market for tire carriers. I refused to pay for the Mopar carrier, because it’s what I believe to be overpriced for what it is. I waited it out for along time until Motobilt released theirs. I had this on my previous Jeep and loved it so I decided to keep it for this JL build. The Motobilt Carrier is built like a tank. It is solid without any squeaks or rattles. Since it was off, I wanted to paint it again to give it another fresh coat of paint but the temperature was just to cold for the paint to properly cure so I decided to just install it and I’ll pull it back off later down the line when it really needs it. what I really like about the Motobilt carrier is that it keeps the spare as close to the body as possible. This to me looks better than one that pushes the tire and wheel away from the Jeep, so I really like this adjustment. Plus this carrier is also adjustable up and down. I have it mounted on the lowest setting to keep the weight low and I also get a better view looking back.

I wanted to keep my rear view camera looking stock and keep it in the same location so I cut the stock carrier up.

once this piece was cut off with a Dremel, I smoothed out the back side to take all the sharp edges off. I painted the aluminum part black and then once dried I placed it over the stock camera mount to test fit the locking cover on the Motobilt carrier.

6E633475-0AB4-4346-8B9D-F32EF08A14DD.jpeg

Once the locking stock camera cover was on and I didn’t need to make any modifications to it I pulled it back off so I could mark and drill a hole for a set screw in the piece I cut off the stock carrier. This piece slides over the stock camera mount and allows you to be able to use the locking cover so I needed it to stay in place. I drilled a small hole on the top corner of it and placed a hex head set screw to secure it. once the locking cover is in place everything looks stock.

Once the tire carrier was installed I wired up an LED ring light that fits inside my wheel.

my next small project was to paint the keyholes and stock antenna black using Rust oleum high heat BBQ paint.
I masked the paint around the keyholes, and removed the antenna. I then scuffed and wiped with alcohol and painted them. I got my heat gun out and applied some heat to it as it was pretty cold out in the garage. Very happy with the results. I know most people use plastidip but that stuff is just not for me. I like to work with paint as I like the overall finish more. Plus it’s permanent.

At the time of my purchase of the first JL in Feb 2018 there wasn’t much out for lifts. The only thing that was really available at that time were spacer lifts and 2” Mopar lift. I ended up with the Mopar lift. Once I decide to move to a 20MY Rubicon I decided I was going to go a different route because now there are endless choices. I went back and forth on going with Rock krawler, MetalCloak and Teraflex. I decided to go with Teraflex.

Well during this time Black Friday had come and gone along with many dollars. I pieced together everything in the Teraflex Alpine RT2 kit except the Speedbumps and the trackbar as I already have the steersmart yeti trackbar. I also purchased a .5” F/R teraflex load level kit to add to the lift plus the steersmarts Draglink with the griffin XD attenuator.

I had been building up a stack of parts from my purchases and some that were pulled off and saved from my last build. I opened the Falcon SP2 3.3’s box and was amazed on how well they package these suckers. These shocks are a thing of beauty. Fingers crossed on that they perform as well as they look. These shocks on this particular forum seem to have a bad stigma about being so stiff and unlivable. I take most things with a grain of salt, so more on this later.

I decided to go ahead and open up most of the suspension I was about to install and lay it out on my living room floor while my wife was still asleep of course

Thought it was a cool picture so I decided to go get the steersmarts stuff and bring it in as well to take one more photo

Time for the install. I always start at the rear but that’s just my personal preference. Went about as easy as it could. The cool thing about the Alpine IR arms is that they can be torqued to spec while up in the air, it’s great because I have more room. Normally you would put the Jeep on its own weight and then torque to spec to not cause the bushing to bind. love these IR arms from Teraflex.

well the following day was just to cold out so I decided to keep the garage doors closed and turn on the heat. Now that I can’t open the garage door to let the sunlight in, now I have really bad lighting because my work light broke so I’m left with just the two bulbs in the ceiling that hardly light up anything.

So the front went on pretty easy as expected, the Upper and lower IR arms are installed and at this point I thought I’d be finishing up until I got to this point on the Front passenger corner. I purchased front daystar spring pad isolators because teraflex has you reuse the stock ones and I did not want to use the mopar ones. So during install on my last corner I realized they sent me a pad meant for a different wound coil. Pretty frustrating but shit happens. I contacted them with a phone call and several emails with pictures and they sent me out a new set and said the one I originally ordered was packaged wrong.

while waiting on the new isolators to show up from Daystar, I had some extra time to cut the holes needed for the Falcon 3.3’s. Teraflex provides a template for the cut but I decided to measure it out on my own and try and get a tighter fit than what I have seen most of these installed come away with.

The following day after I came home from work the spring pads arrived so I finished up the lift. I also decided to go ahead and install the Roam steps I had on my Previous JL so my wife and daughter can get in easier. Plus I think they look great.

So after the suspension install a couple of weeks went by and I decided to make some time to install the steering linkages from steersmart.

I have the Steersmart yeti trackbar, yeti draglink with the griffin XD attenuator, yeti tierod and I ended having to flip the falcon SS with the steersmart bracket on the trackbar side and I used Teraflex’s bracket over the tierod.

the stock draglink had to be removed using a pickle fork and a sledge. Came right out after I stopped being gentle. :muscle::)

These are just a few photos showing the end result of the Falcon SP2 3.3’s installed after cutting the liner with a razor blade.

for the rear liner I just used my own cut line by eying it and making a few adjustments along the way. I was wanting a tight fit without large holes. The template the Teraflex sends with it would be fine for most but I wasn’t happy with it.

It is a pretty tight fit in there once everything starts moving around so I had to make some adjustments to clear everything.

So after having the suspension and all the steering components installed for about a week I decided I would take it into a shop to have an alignment done.
I really struggle with letting other mechanics work on my vehicles even with alignments. Good mechanics that pay attention to detail are hard to find.
anyway after reading many reviews I decided I’d take it in. I asked to speak to the mechanic before hand to go over somethings with him. Well to make a very long story short, on the drive home I was getting some knocking once I pulled over I could tell it was making contact.
I was pretty upset to see nothing was checked for clearances so now I’m having to do it after I already paid them to do the job right.

This is the adjustment collar on the Teraflex front lower control arm this just needed to slide back a little to make sure it cleared. This made contact with the control arm bracket on the axle. Once I adjusted it it clears fine.
C38E706A-176D-49FA-8D94-FEEB1C5B9434.jpeg

This is the Falcon SS and was making contact with the steersmarts adjustment collars again it’s fine once you rotate and check for clearances.

After a phone call and some photos they refunded all my money back.

So one of the things I wanted to see if I could fix was water coming into the cabin when it rains pretty hard and you open the door it comes streaming in.
I already have a thread on this below so I will not go into detail here. Just a quick reference about it.

This has worked great to fix the water issue, but you do have some added wind noise that I noticed on my road trip out to the east coast.
So I have added some weather stripping along the inside to cut it down. I also trimmed it down to make it much more narrow along the entire piece going up the windscreen frame to the drip rail. This has helped a lot.

It is an on going project experimenting on works best to get the solution I am looking for. I have one more tweak to it that I want to make and see the effects it has on it before I make a final version. But as of right now i do like it the way it is now and it works.

My wife was in a wedding for one of her friends so we took a trip out to the east coast.

While my wife was getting ready my daughter and I took the Jeep and our dog out to the beach. It was freezing out so we didn’t stay very long.
These pics are at Kure Beach North Carolina

So now that the suspension has been on for several weeks and all the steering components, lets talk about that.

First let’s talk about the Steersmarts linkage. They are built and packaged very well. When you lift them out of the packaging you can feel how stout they are compared to the factory parts. I wasn’t having any steering issues but knew in time it would come so I wanted to just go ahead and get this built up right away. Especially since I run some heavy wheels and tires.
Also if my wife and daughter wanted to drive it, I’d feel confident that they would be in control of the Jeep at all times.
The steering feels pretty tight but still probably has a little slop or play at the center position. I’m not sure if that is a combo of the steering box lash and it flexing or what but it’s there.
I haven’t made any adjustments to the box yet, probably will at some point to see if I can get just a little out of it.

I also am looking at purchasing the Synergy track bar and sector shaft brace and see if that helps improve it even more.

Now the Teraflex Suspension. It’s great, no squeaks, binding and It’s smooth and quite, it feels planted around a fast winding corner. most of the reviews I read on here about the Falcon 3.3’s is that they are teeth rattling stiff, even on the softer setting. I took that with a grain of salt and glad I did, because these shocks are fantastic and look every bit of sexy.

I am guessing that maybe most of those bad reviews were regurgitated from someone who has no first hand knowledge of the falcon 3.3’s and they just post what they read. On the soft setting they are as plush as I would want them on the road. I definitely prefer this set up over the Mopar/Fox kit I had previously.

if you haven’t seen the building process of these falcons you should check this video out.

Since I had taken delivery of the Diabolical Slipstream before the install, I decided to pull the carpet and panels from the back section and lay down some Noico 80mil sound deadening. This stuff is very easy to use. I just wiped down the surface with alcohol before I applied it to the surface. This was a pretty time consuming process as I cut the sheets into different size strips for the area or surface I was trying to cover. Once I got the area covered I then was able to go back over certain sections with much larger sheets and put a second layer down. This was much faster.

The following morning I laid the slipstream out as I like to do with most things I work on so I can see everything that must be done. I try to keep an organized work area as I go. There isn’t any printed instructions that come with this box but there a several YouTube videos you can watch to get you through. if you take your time and are not in a rush it’s not a bad install, fairly simple. I have the subwoofer in the back so there is that one side that has a bolt or two that can be difficult to get to unless you have Trump hands.:giggle:

The pins that come with the box are all metal and don’t rattle around but on a few turns heard one slide from one side to the other as I turned, so I thought I’d put some heat shrink around it to make a tighter fit so it doesn’t move at all. It worked for a couple of them but most of the pins are a really tight fit already and don’t need anything around it.

my family and I took our dog for a walk through the trails of Edwin Warner park so took a couple of photos.
Finally felt a bit at ease about leaving anything of value in the Jeep with the doors off due to having the slipstream. Anything that we didn’t want to bring with us we just put it in the slipstream. I haven’t been able to use it much but so far I really like this version of cargo security cover, as it’s very versatile and functional but as time goes on I will give an updated review once I’m out on the road more and get some real use out of it. For now I love the looks, and there is zero rattle coming from the box so that’s a huge plus.

Beer time: The ferryman, brewed by Orpheus brewing. This brewery has some very interesting craft brews so if you get a chance pick something up from them and give it a try. I was expecting a little more kick from this one though having ghost pepper in it.

The last couple of projects and this one as well are sponsored by
COVID -19:LOL:;)

So last week after installing the slipstream, and still with plenty of time with all this “work” from home I decided put down some more sound deadening. So I pulled the Jeep in the garage and pulled all the doors so I can have easier access, also pulled seats and carpet. I initially was going to to try and do it with the seats in there but this was so much easier. if you are going to remove the rear seat, I highly recommend disconnecting the two pieces. It is way easier to handle and take out that way. all it is to separate the two is two bolts, one for the small seat and the other for the seat belt.
70F8AC6E-E665-45D0-8EA8-680976428415.jpeg

I vacuumed up the dirt that was on the floor pan and then wiped down with alcohol. I did the same process as before so I will not go into detail about it again. In the future I plan to come back and lay down a mass loaded vinyl layer to suppress different frequencies but for now I wanted to get this out of the way.

I also did the back of the two front kick panels and all the side panels along the floor board and running up the seat belt area. This gave some heft to the panel and made it feel not as flimsy. Once I got everything buttoned back up. It felt very solid and secure.

My daughter and I decided to go take the dog for a walk again and it was a gorgeous day for photos.

Great build.
Thoughts on the noise reduction after installing all the sound proofing stuff?
What setting are is used on the Falcon Stabilizer (soft, medium, hard)?

Well I’m am not fully done with my noise reduction yet as I still have to lay down a layer of closed cell foam, and mass load vinyl on the floor and then do the doors and that should be good at that point. I was wanting to do it in sections to get some data between layers before making a post on this subject, so that will come at a later time.

my initial thoughts on this layer is that it definitely changes the tone of noise and dampens or muffles it. Since I did the backs of the panels they seem way more solid then sounding like hollow plastic when you knock on them. They are very solid sounding now. No rattles or squeaky plastics when going over bumps. With just this layer of sound deadening you could expect a big drop in decibels but this certainly isn’t going to make the Jeep whisper quiet. That isn’t what this does and I believe a lot of people get it misconstrued, this will dampen and reduce vibrations and some road noise but not a ton by itself. To achieve what most people are after when looking to reduce road noise, you would have to apply a layer of closed cell foam and MLV to really reduce road noise. At some point in the future I plan to do this and will record my findings and post them here.

The Falcon is on the Medium.
