Guys, that's that high temperature sealant thingy that will go around the fill and drain plugs in the transfer case. I don't know why this guy is using it in the video, so I'm just using it following him.

Thanks for the reminder i am long overdue myself.

That thread sealant is a good idea but if I recall correctly there is one incorrect torque spec given. No way that bolt goes that high. It’s actually 18 ft lbs per Alldata iirc. I looked at that video when making my own and talked about this.
This is from my Tech Authority Service Manual for my 2018.

It was one of the bolts. I’ll go check and edit this post. I think he said it was 48 but my memory isn’t recalling off hand. These days I reference my own videos so I don’t have to remember😄.

Edit: It was said to be 48. Per Fastenal tables, the max any M8 bolt would go is 29 ft lbs with a 12.9 grade. I can’t recall if that bolt was 8.8 or 10.9 but either way it would not even approach 48.

Alldata leaves some to be desired having nomenclature with no visual location reference. I recorded and said 16 but added text during editing letting people know it’s 18 along with a screen shot and bold red underline of the correct spec.

Guys, is a transfer case active in 4WD only? Also, why a sealant is required around its plugs unlike the oil pan drain plug?

I plan to drain my new t-case on Friday after putting some offroad miles on it on Thursday. I don't have any Loctite sealant and I'm not planning on removing the t-case skid plate and instead was going to Rube Goldberg my way through it with some tin foil and funnels. 🤞 🤣
I just use a vacuum extraction pump. Easy peezy, no mess, in and out in less than 15 minutes.

I don't think of transfer cases as "active" or "inactive". But rather they are in various modes, such as; 2wd Hi, 4wd Hi, 4wd Lo, etc.

The oil pan plug has a straight thread with a flange and a seal on the flange. The transfer case as well as the differentials, have plugs with a tapered pipe thread, which seals on the threads themselves. The tighter you torque them, the tighter the seal. As you might imagine, the tapered threads still can have microscopic spaces around the threads. That's where a thread sealant or teflon tape can help.

Great, that means to warm up the transfer case fluid before draining I just need to drive the Jeep on the highway.

Everything looks good. 13 mm and 18 mm sockets for the skid plate, 10 mm Hex for TC drain and fill plugs, sealant, quart bottle pump, torque wrench, ratchet, and brake parts cleaner to clean the plugs.
I learned my lesson, don't open things with the torque wrench, torque wrench only for the last precise closing. And the impact gun only for opening the skid plate bolts, ratchet for closing them.

Ha you were so much more prepared than I. My Rube Goldberg device failed, hot ATF all over myself and the driveway. 😂

I got it done though. I put some yellow teflon tape on on the plugs since I didn't have any of that loctite stuff.

Hey that yellow tape works but it’s a little slower. Next time I’ll get some of this thread sealant.

Was reading through this thread... One of a few Transfer case fluid related threads..

I want to add a few comments...

I strongly encourage you not to do the transfer case fluid deed unless you have 3 containers of fluid on hand!

Yes 3.... on hand.......... Expect to use 4.5 pts for the Transfer Case. Again, if you spill or squirt or whatever you want enough fluid on hand.

You don't want to be in the midst of the deed and not have enough fluid at hand to get-er done.

ALSO.... I encourage guys and gals not to remove the guard. Not necessary. Slows you down and you risk breaking one of the bolts that secures the guard. Just use a foil tray like pictured below when draining the transfer case. You can buy a foil pan at the Dollar Store and easy shape it.

By the way, using Yellow or Pink Teflon Tape is not just to prevent seeping but it also cuts down the chance that the drain plug will seize up and be a bear or impossible to remove the next time you want to remove.

So…..if a You Tube promoter suddenly whipped out a cheese grater, and took it to his scrotum, would you do likewise as well?

That's the conventional wisdom when draining most if not all powertrain fluids: the hotter, the better. That maximizes evacuation of suspended solids, etc.

I exclude coolant and brake fluid here for obvious reasons.
