I can unfortunately confirm that IT IS NOT waterproof. My fob was washed with my trousers in the washing machine and now it has a mind of its own. Pressing the lock/unlock button causes it to freak out and does the opposite or nothing at all. My Jeep still recognised the fob in the vehicle so that’s something...

Interestingly.. I went windsurfing with the fob in my boardshorts pocket accidentally. Only to find out after I came out all soaked in sea water.
Miraculously.. The fob still worked, I rinsed it with fresh water, opened it up, and wiped it down thoroughly, the battery was definitely starting to corrode a little. But after I aired it out in the sun for a while, it has been working fine no issues thus far!

I would love to have the option to get my new Jeep with the old style steel key . I never had any problems with those traditional keys . I was able to make as many copies as I needed and it always worked 100% .

I agree on the plain key, for the base Sport. No power locks, Windows, a keyed ignition would be pleasingly Retro, in keeping with the BASIC vibe.

Mine also went through the wash once, in a pants pocket. I popped it apart and used a hair dryer on it. There was some water inside. Thankfully that was weeks ago and it continues to work fine.

So, I'm working on my key (I like to attach my house keys with custom parts to avoid using key rings) and I have it disassembled. It does appear that the key is waterproof. The reason for its size is likely the fact that the engineers are lazy morons. There's a lot of totally empty space here, and even with the gaskets, there's absolutely no reason to make this bigger than the key for any other jeep model. They all are much smaller profile keys that do exactly the same thing. I applaud the effort they took in making it waterproof (even though they don't advertise it anywhere), but there is simply no excuse for the size.

Or maybe the engineers did their job really well. Is it possible they considered that Jeepers are outdoors people and that it might be a good idea to leave enough internal displacement that the keyfob actually floats if dropped in water?

Thanks for the info (and the tear-down) on the key fob. I was wondering whether it was waterproof and was hoping Jeep had thought of that. Also good to know of the torque/winding of the spring for the physical key.

With my former Jeep Patriot, the key fob made it through the washing machine (not dryer) at least three times and I'd swim with it on occasion. I suppose the JL's fob might be different due to the spring-loaded physical key action.

I want to know who makes smaller 'non-remote' keys, not flip style, that lets you lock and unlock doors. I have a base Sport (on purpose) and want that, and to remove the electronics and create a separate fob only for that.

@BasicJeepDude

I'm unsure by what you wrote, exactly what you are seeking.

Forum Sponsor @Threedom offers custom design fobs and has this offering .....

Went to the Threedom site. Curious......the RFID chip is what allows the pushbutton start to work. If you have no power locks or other features (a buttonless remote), do you still need the battery and circuit board on the remote for the Jeep to start, or can that be RFID chip be in your pocket (or wallet) and not need to be placed at the push button to work?
