I have a stock JL Rubicon and I want to put 35" tires on it and new after market rims, either 17" or 18", doesn't matter. I don't plan on lifting it and I don't do a lot of off-roading, so rubbing isn't a concern. It's primarily for looks.
I want a tire that will stick out beyond my fender between 1" to 2" and to be as wide as possible to give it a wider stance (don't want a big tire that is skinny). What is the best tire size and rim offset that would make this happen?

A 17x9 rim with -6 offset should push you out a little more than 2 inches from where your at now. You can search for a wheel off set calculator online and play with the numbers. I think your current rim is 17x7.5 +44 offset.

www.tiresize.com is a great site. You can do a side-by-side comparison with the OEM tires to any other size. Thanks for the info. the 325/65/18 with a 0 to -10 offset should work great.....but then again I do like the 375/60/18 haha

Thank you for this information!

So Im just confused on something. If I want 33" tires, I would search for 285's?

Im confused because 285 represents millimeters, but that doesnt convert to 33 inches. Instead it converts to 11.22.

What am I looking at wrong?

I was as confused as you on this. The best sight for you to visit is www.tiresize.com. It will tell you all you need.
285mm is the width or the tire, so 11.2" wide is correct The next number is the aspect ratio of the width from rim to outer edge of tire. So if you had a 285/70 r17 tire, that would give you 7.9 from rim edge to outer edge of tire. So add the 17" rim and the the to side wall widths (7.9) that would give you a 32.8" tire diameter. So in other words, if you had an 18" rim, that would make the diameter 1" bigger, making it 33.8" diameter.
Now if you see a tire and it's called out as 35x12.5R17, that is actually 35" diameter and 12.5" wide.....much easier

That's not always true. The diameter and width are frequently nominal or ball park. For example:

Nitto Mud Grapplers 37x13.50R17LT E (Actual Diameter: 37.05 ) Width : 14.57"
The 37X13.50R17 Toyo Open Country M/T has a diameter of 37", a width of 14.6"

When I get my 2019 JLR I'm leaning towards the Nitto's but may go with Toyo. Mounted on 17x19 3.5” BS Method 105 Beadlock

Yes I agree, it is a ballpark for sure but you need to start somewhere. The amount of pressure you have in them makes a difference also.
I ordered some Nitto ridge grapplers 35x12.5R17 and new rims the other day and they are supposed to stick out past my fender by about 2.15" according to www.tiresize.com, we'll see if it's actually more then that....I'm hoping they won't

I have a 2019 JL being delivered in the next 2 weeks (I hope!). Before I take delivery the dealership will be installing a Full Mopar 2” Lift Kit and they phoned today saying I need to pick the tires and wheels ASAP so they will have them there. I know NOTHING about tires (Dad taught me how to change a tire back in the day but never taught the specifics haha). Looking for HELP:

Decided on KMC XD Series Grenade Solid Blk 20x10 Rims and wanted 35 tires, originally Grappler Ridge BUT I can’t find average miles before replacement and if it’s even the tire I want. I’m going strictly on looks as I won’t be doing much off roading. Even though I am a female, I want beefier tires but ones not noisey on the highway. Prefer tires that I can get at least, or close to, 30k miles - is that even realistic?

Help

HI Cait...you may have missed it, but on page one of this thread there is a very good listing of the different brands of tires and different styles (mud, sand, street, etc.). There are many good tires available in 35" that will pair up nicely with your XD Grenades. Most of them will be able to go for 50k. Select a tire that has a "C" or "D" rating as it will be more comfortable on the road.

Take a look and see if this helps. If not, post questions and help is always here. Others if you have any suggestions, jump in!

Cheers and best wishes

Added my 35x12.5R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers and Fuel Anza rims with a +6mm offset. Tires stick out past the fenders about 2" giving it a much more aggressive look. Could't be happier with the way it looks right now.

Thanks for this! I know you'll have people saying "just do the chalk test" but this is a great place to start.

Starting to collect tire pressure and PSI recommendations for tire sizes and types. I'll post them up if others contribute.

I currently have Nitto Ridge Grapplers 315/70/17 E

Nitto recommendations come from a Toyo chart. I believe this to be universal. This can be found in the latter portion of this document : https://www.toyotires.com/media/2125/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20170203.pdf

So the first thing to find out is the size of your stock tire and what the recommended PSI is. (Located on the inner door pannel)

For those that have a Rubicon JLU, that would be 285/70/17 C @ 37 PSI.
Locate the tire size and PSI on the chart and you would see that a tire that size inflated at that pressure was meant to hold 2,189lbs.

Locate the tire size of your NEW tire on the chart and it will list different weight specs at different pressures. For example for my tire:

-----PSI------------------35-------------- 40---45-----50-------------55----60-----65----------
LT315/70R17 Single 2535 (C) 113 2685 2915 3195 (D) 121 3195 3195 3195 (E) 121

A Nitto Ridge Grappler 315/70/17 @ 35 PSI could hold 2535 lbs
Compare that to the 2,189 lbs the stock tires could hold at the recommended 37 PSI. It would be ideal to find the same weight at the right PSI but this data simply doesn't exist. (Probably because these tires were designed for bigger trucks requiring more weight).

Long story short, the recommended PSI for the tire should be somewhere BELOW 35. My past searches has found that most forum members run them around 25-35 with the majority at 30 PSI. With this info, if so willing, someone could test out their own experiences with ride quality, tire wear, MPG, and chalk tests. Starting point would be around 30 PSI.

Other 35 inch Tire sizing data (This one has data for 25 PSI) :
--------PSI----------25----30----35-------------40---45-----50--------------55---60---65
35X12.50R17LT 1875 2155 2405 (C) 111 2625 2840 3000 (D) 119 3065 3130 3195 (E) 121

For those of you that own this one data shows that recommended PSI would be 31 PSI.

Manufacturer recommendations for 37's :

37x12.50R17LT D JLU PSI : 26
37x13.50R17LT E JLU PSI : <25

Working list... Feel free to add.

Rating (C,D,E) Ply - Thickness of sidewall. Additional protection + load = stiffer ride.
Actual diameters are listed - Width should also be taken into consideration dependent on wheel/rim of choice.

A three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol branded on a tire's sidewall indicates the tire meets required performance criteria in snow testing to be considered severe snow service-rated. 3PMSF-branded all-season and all-terrain tires cannot match the traction of dedicated winter / snow tires in all winter weather conditions and should not be considered a replacement for where and when a dedicated winter tire is needed.

Listed Tire pressures are manufacturer recommendations (See post #25 for explanation).

So I’m late to this but surely the the mastercraft was a typo? The 315/70/17 is bigger than the 37x12.50r17

Hi Jimmy. Looks great! Three questions for you:
1. Any lift on it? (Doesn't look like it, but wanted to check)
2. What size wheels?
3. How is your Jeep driving with the new set up?

Thanks!

Hey Robert, Thanks

No after market lift, only the 2" that comes with the Rubicon
Wheels are Fuel Anza 17x8.5x127 - Part number D55717857350 (so 17" rim)
I think it drives better with these tires and wheels. I have my pressure at 33 psi and it feels comfortable, maybe slightly bumpier, but it feels....do I dare say it?....more like a Jeep. They are more aggressive and you can feel them on the road more, but still very quite. I feel as tho it corrected some of the tracking that I was feeling with the BF Goodrich. Not sure why, maybe it's the wider tires....maybe the wider stance from the +6 offset on the rims, maybe it's my imagination, I dunno, but I'll take it. Haven't been able to try it in any heavy snow yet, but it had no problem in 4" of snow and they are great in the rain.
