So I put my JL in 4L for the first time today and it kept popping back into neutral. After the 3rd time it shut off and I had to restart an continue in 4H. After that the check engine light went on. None of the engine gauges indicate anything wrong and it drives fine but the light won’t go off. When it popped out of 4L into N it revel a bit, but nothing crazy. Any suggestions as to why check engine light is on or how I might be able to get the code and look it up without one of those devices.

There is no short cut to reading codes on the JL's like there was with the JK's, you gotta have a OBD II reader, flashcal, Tazer, etc. You can clear the codes by disconnecting battery for a while (but you have to make sure you are disconnecting both batteries) but then you will never know what the code was/were.

I experienced a similar event last week in my 19 JLUR. I was traversing some mountain snow in 4-lo and after about a 1/4 mile it randomly popped into neutral. This happened a few times and then the check engine light came on. A “service transmission soon” message also flashed briefly on the screen.

My OBD II reader gave me the following two codes:

P0007
U2500

I brought it to the dealer and they couldn’t find anything wrong. They claimed 4-lo was not fully engaged.

This happened to me once. After being in the dealership many times (who were great BTW) it turned out I had metal fragments in my engine. They replaced my engine in February and it's been amazing ever since. I'm driving a 2018 Unlimited Sport with the 3.6L engine.

I've not had any codes such as this, but I do recall that when I first engaged 4Hi, shifting was very hard, and not easy. Here in AZ, we don't really need 4Hi much unless going into really rough situations, but I do slip the jeep into and out of 4H on occasion when traversing rocky hills so as not to chew up (spin) the rear tires. Nowadays, the jeeps slip into, and out of 4H very easy, and with nothing like that first time. I would tell you to be firm when pulling it onto 4Hi, and make sure your rolling/moving at some sort of speed.

Hi graniterubi2dr and JesseSC,
We understand why this may be concerning. Please let us know via private message if this continues to happen and we'll gladly have this documented and looked into on our end.

Hi Jess and Jeep cares, after about 5 starts the check engine light went out. It drove fine even when the light was on which leads me to believe it had something to do with the high revs that occurred when it popped out of 4L. After playing with it a bit more I think I may not have pulled the shift lever as far back as it actually goes because it was so tight.

Jess next time try really pulling it back as far as it goes, I think that’s the problem at least for me.

I've had these codes set when I forget to put the trans in neutral before taking it out of 4w low.
Shift firmly in 4w low with the trans is in neutral, rolling at a creep. If you get the error, either reset with reader or let it clear itself.
