As long as you carry it you won't need it. First trip you forget to pack it and you'll be shoveling with a chancla like JimLee :CWL:
That was like 11 years ago and my wife still bitches about those damn things, they got destroyed of course.

if you carry an axe, can probably cut that hole size down a bit on the length and width. Still want to go at least 6’ deep though...
Axe????? WTF is this 1892, I carry a chainsaw.

Too much maintenance. That said, if you're going to embrace internal combustion, might as well go the full monty. Or is that full-lizzie?

I bought one of this type. Everybody thinks folding shovel but I thought a non-folder would be stronger, plus easier to find at Lowes or Home Depot. I had picked out one on their website then went to buy it and thought it was shorter in person than I thought so I looked around the store and bought one a little bit longer. It's not that much harder to fit in with my gear and I figured if I needed one, I would be better off with one that was big enough to get the job done. I haven't actually had to use it yet though.

I spent a good bit of my early life on the wrong end of a shovel. The gimmicky folding shovels are frustrating if you really have to dig. I‘d advise a full-size, fiberglass D-handle shovel you can pick up at the big box store for $25. Sharpen the leading edge for best results.

Pretty sure you meant sharpen the edges.... all the edges.

Just have a small foldable one that fits in back storage. Have used it on the sand a couple of times and also to dig out and flatten the ground so a buddy could place his jack square on the ground to change a flat on the trail. The don't take up much space.

A shovel is one of the "5 essentials" required for beach driving.
I carry a military trenching shovel.

I am a bit surprised at the number of responses that have never needed a shovel for recovery. I have had to get myself out of both sand and snow with a shovel. One winter a couple years ago with out my shovel my Jeep would have probably stayed in the woods until spring. I always carry one.
