Hi All,

I have a 2018 JL Sport and want to buy some bigger tires. I am stuck between the 285/70r17, 33x12.50r17, and 285/70r17. My favorite choice is the 285/75's which are technically a 34 inch tire but i'm worried with the Sports gearing I'll lose too much pickup and it will be slow on the highway.

I think they would drive best on the 285/70, but when I see them on rubicons they dont look big enough.

Anyone have any thoughts to help me make up my mind?

Try to keep your unsprung weight down (the weight of the tire + the wheel) as close to the OEM weight as possible and there should be less of an impact on drivability versus simply choosing a tire based upon looks.

Consider the brand of tire choice - BFG’s are usually a bit smaller than the advertised size.
Thanks Notorious. Any idea how much bigger Ridge Grapplers would be? Or, do you have another brand you would suggest?

I've been looking at the KO2s, Ridge Grapplers, and Toyo Open Countries.

Does that mean you would suggest going with the 285/70s?

No, what I mean is there can be a very wide range of weights between tires of the same size. Try to find one of the lightest in the size you are looking for. Make sense?

@Cdubs727 - here is a sheet that I created with 35", 37", and 40" tires. I know that you are not looking to go that large, but look at the weight differences on tires of the same size (especially 35") to give you an idea.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
I'm currently running 295/70/17s, they've worked out pretty well w/ stock gearing on my v6 8AT, only problem is that size is only available in E-rated so the tire options will be heavier than C or D rated tires.

If you don't plan to lift I'd stick w/ 285/70s, and the BFGs running a bit smaller than most, those would be a good choice and the ones on Rubicons are the light C-rated. You can find them on the site for good deals all the time too!

Makes a lot of sense, thank you. I've been using Tiresize.com to compare tires and that has been helping.

I really am enjoying my 295/70r17 ridge grapplers. Driveability really didn’t change once I updated the tire size with JSCAN. Mileage dropped from around 24 at 70mph to 21-22 at 70mph. Anything over 70 and just as stock tires the mileage drops quick from the brick like shape.

Ensure that you budget for something to correct tire size so the transmission shift points change accordingly.

pics are stock height with 295s

im assuming there is a typo and you meant to say 295? Which would be your favorites/34s?

i have put a few sets of 315/70/17s on AT Sports. Everyone is more than happy with the looks and performance. It will be a slight drop in performance and mpg from the stock tire but definitely worth it.

i ran on stock rubi tires/wheels for a year. Just a hair difference from the stock set up. The i jumped to the 315s/35s. Slightly more but woooorth it. Just be sure to grab a tazer for the 35s. Not really necessary for the 33s imo.

bigger looks better and will ride a little nicer due to more sidewall, depending on the load of the tire C, D or E

I just had a set of Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLTs installed this morning. I have a Sport Altitude with 18 inch wheels, so I went with the 275/75R18 size. They are available in the sizes you are considering. I've done some highway driving with them and they are quiet and comfortable. I think they ride better than the stock Bridgestone Duelers I had.

Jeep looks great!! 295's are on my list as well. They are pretty close in size to the 285/75's. Will all come down to what I can get the best price on.

No typo. 285/75's are actually a bit taller and the 295's are a bit wider. They are both pretty similar actually, but based on my search I can get the 285's a bit cheaper.

Thanks for your feedback! You're easing my worry about going bigger and possibly loosing some performance. The look will definitely be worth it. Jeeps just look so much better with bigger tires!

Here's mine w/ 295/70/17s (soon to be 315/70/17)
Stock, w/ 295s on 17x8.5+10 wheels, and then w/ a Rubicon suspension swap (net 2" lift), and then w/ the high fender kit so I can run those 315s!
FWIW I wouldn't recommend anything over a 285/70/17 without a 1.5" or more lift.

Thanks! It’s just where I want it for now. Starting to save for some rubi axles and after that it will 35s. Right now I wanted to keep it small enough to make getting the rear facing kiddo in a little easier.

Also a screen shot of 295/70 vs 285/75. Realistic expectations either could be the larger depending on the brand. My ridge grapplers measure right on when mounted on stock wheels.

How it sits currently with 2” dynatrac springs giving exactly 3” of lift via the tape measure.
