I’m interested in getting a black grill, but I have a Sport which means that the trim pieces are part of the grill and will also be black. I prefer the Sahara/Rubicon look where the trim pieces are separate and remain the primary body color, creating a sort of body color frame around the black grill. I like the look of the contrast, especially since I have the black plastic fenders.

Removing the grill I get, but how does the Plastidip process work...is it a spray can and you just apply multiple coats? And would I just mask off the trim pieces that I want to remain body color?

That's exactly right. It's sprayon (removable) rubber. You just mask off what you want to remain color and spray the rest. I would recommend 3-4 coats. It goes on quick and easy and dries rather quickly. No need to sand (scratch), just wipe surface clean. Remember to do typical nice/even coats....dont sit in 1 spot too long or the finish will look uneven.

After the 3-4 initial color coats, consider a few coats of something called Plastidip Glossifier. It protects the color from fade and like the name says, makes it a bit more glossy. I have plastidipped my wheels on my vehicles for years, including my JL. Black with Glossifer.

Just dipped my grill inserts and bumper inserts on my JLU Sahara, we will see how long it lasts but it certainly looks better IMO! I’ve heard the minimum is 5 coats so I usually go at least 6. Did my rims previously (before upgrading) and also my Jeep lettering on the fender (still going strong). The stuff is super easy to use and apply! And the grille breaks down into several different pieces so you really don’t have to mask anything.

This is on my list. I also prefer that the trim pieces be body colored. Please post pictures if you try this.

Just plain (matte) black and nothing else, just 6-8 coats. So far so good!

You can buy satin black insert overlays for about $20 on amazon. Less hassle

Those only work for the sport models, the rub and saha have actual parts inside the grill that cant be inserted
