That is such an awesome rig! How does the JL tow the Patriot loaded down? My wife and I have a 22' JLU XR and are looking for the right camper to overland with. Has to fit in the garage too. How is sleeping in the tent enclosure? Do you have issue with wind noise while trying to sleep? Again, awesome pics and rig! Thanks for posting!!
Same. Max Coupler here. I couldn't open the gate with 33s. Now I have a 1inch lift and it is enough for me to open it. Added bonus I didn't even expect out of the small lift.It depends on how much your Jeep is lifted, how big your tires are, the required height of your trailer, and the type of hitch that you're using.
We couldn't open the tailgate of our last JLUR (stock with 33s) when hooked to our little military-style trailer, but the tailgate opens fully with the new JLUR with a 2.5" lift and 37s. Both with a Max Coupler articulating hitch.
Nice trailer. I love the way it pops open. Thanks!
My JL is a diesel. Naturally, it pulls way better than a gas engine. I don’t even know it’s there, especially with the trailer being fairly light to begin with (2400 lbs dry) and the trailer having electric brakes. Jeep won’t tell you for liability issues, but the diesel (and non diesels) will comfortable tow much more than the 3500 lbs it’s rates for. I also know that there are plenty of people with gas JLs that tow Patriot campers just fine.
When I have 35 gallons of water, 3 bikes, 3 inflatable boats, fridge full of food/drinks, firepit, diesel fuel for the webasto tent and water heater, tools, solar panels, some other gear, I’m at about 3300 lbs. So, still under the “rated” limit. And the return trip, you’re always going to be lighter.
I searched long and hard for a trailer. I wanted one that could:
-stand up in
-lounge/sit inside if bad weather and not feel clostrophobic,
-was relatively light
-could fit and be stored easily (this is basically a small 6’x6’ box that transforms into a mini house)
-could sleep 3
-was a smaller/narrower/footprint than the Jeep
-had outside cooking
-had lots of storage and a hard lid with roof rack
-could set up and tear down within 10-15mims
-could manually push and move into the garage without using tow vehicle
-could go off road with independent suspension and air bags for leveling
It was pricey, but we love it. And it was worth it for us. It’s very high quality and extremely well designed and thought out. There’s a spot for everything. We’ve had such good adventures and memories already in the 9 months we’ve had it.
I was close to other options like turtle back, off grid trailers expedition, black bean (which is amazing btw), but they broke some of the requirements above.
I’ve not had any wind or rain issues, but we’ve also not had the chance to test it in extreme conditions.
Sometimes I wonder about a hard sided trailer for speed, safety, total protection, but everything is a trade off.

Thank you for all of the great information! I have the 3.6 XR with 4.56's so she can get out of her own way down low but cruising at hwy speed she will cycle gears on the slightest of inclines, I live in FL. That said, I want to ensure I am staying on the lighter side of the max, which is fine, it is just my wife and I. I will also be keeping what we get in our 3rd stall in the garage which is 84" tall. I am sure there is a little flex here given the fact I have deflators and air on hand. The Black Bean is pretty slick but it is right at that limit. Regardless my wife and I are flying to Overland Expo East to see several in person and talk through options with the SME's. Again, AWESOME rig and we hope to be in the same boat by this time next year! Thanks again for the input, very valuable!!Thanks!

You have me dreaming about Padre Island again.Wife and I woke up Friday morning, looked at each other and both said, "Beach." She got us ready to go and I left work early for another quick weekend trip to Padre Island National Seashore; one of our favorite dispersed camping getaways. The Gulf water bath warm just as fall begins and the scattered showers and clouds just right for enjoying the pelicans, herons and sunrises–
Wonderful place and nice weather!Salsbury Lake, British Columbia - Canada
