Performance in winter, no lsd

LSD isn’t something that would cause a driver a problem in slippery conditions. Locking rear diff, on the other hand, could though.

If you have a specific situation where LSD can cause a driver to lose control, I’d like to know what it is.

No one is doing normal driving with lockers on. It wouldn't even engage at that speed....its for when you are stuck.

For years I drove pickups with open rears and no traction control. If it gets slick enough to be a problem just throw it in 4H and drive on. Nothing to worry about

Whether you have AWD/LSD/4WD---the most important snow driving success will be in--

Driver technique/snow tires and the single MOST IMPORTANT--

NO TIRE SPIN--you have to watch the TACH and keep a light foot/low gears-

Since you already have your Jeep, an LSD would make life a lot better in the winter, as both open diffs can be dangerous especially on hard packed snow/ice. Ridiculously, your set-up gives all power to the wheels that are slipping. Therefore, on ice, you are srewed and tattooed.

My brother and I had the same Jeep, same color, set-up and all with the exception that I had the Jeep trac-lok rear LSD. My Jeep was incomparably better than his on slippery surfaces. It wasn’t long that he had it installed in his in the middle of the first winter.

I recommend the Jeep oem trac-lok, as I’ve had it in mine and the family’s Jeeps ( XJ, TJ, ZJ, JL) since the mid-90’s and none of us ever had a problem with them.

I'm sure the user that asked this 4 years ago has figured out the intricacies of winter driving. They haven't been seen here for 3 years though so, maybe they didn't.

My 12 JKR with open diffs was not as good as my wife’s 12JKU Sport. She had lsd and could handle our driveway in 2wd while my rubicon was less than stellar without 4wd. Just my experience, and I made sure my 22 JT Willys had lsd before ordering it (and I am trading that on a 23 JLU Willys with lsd - Earl).

100% agreed. On my TJ, I had:

OEM LSD (basically open) and front open (little acceleration, but great handling)

To:

OEM LSD and front lunchbox (amazing acceleration, but terrible handling)

To:

Gear-based LSD front and rear (great acceleration, and great handling)

I WILL say, though, with the current setup, if I mash the pedal - the whole Jeep goes to the right and forward on very low traction surfaces.

That’s been my experience as well: LSD shines in slippery conditions, even in 2WD; lockers not so much...unless you are in 1+ feet of snow.

Tbh. I dont like LSD on the snow. It makes my rear kick to the sides on slippery conditions until I turn 4hi. This at speed. On fresh snow it is very nice. And on slow conditions or if drifting to a side it helps.

But if I had to choose for winter driving I would prefer not to have it.

Ive driven cars with LSD before that were very nice in slippery conditions. I think the LSD in these JLs is a bit too aggressive and intended for mild offroading.
