Saturday while driving home from a week at the beach my front passenger window exploded. It sounded like a gun went off in the Jeep, I looked to find my window shattered! Has anyone had this happen or heard of this happening? I had to pull off on the side of the road to get the glass off my 12 year old granddaughter who was sitting in the front passenger seat.

Wow, I hope sheā€™s ok, that would really be frightening.
Road rock maybe?
Iā€™ve seen widows shatter but usually the doors been tweaked or something and a bump in the road flexes stuff enough to break the glass.

I read a fairly long thread about sudden temperature changes. If you were at the beach all day with the sun heating the glass then started the AC with a vent blowing on the window, maybe the sudden temperature change could have caused this.

I make sure my vents do not blow on my windows and I had been on the road for about 2 hours that morning. This happen around 11:00 am. There were no sudden temperature changes.

She is ok, just scared us all. I didn't see anything fly up, we were just coasting along on the interstate in the center lane with no one in the right lane beside me. We were coming up to a slower vehicle so we had moved to the center lane. I was looking in my side mirror when I heard the bang and seen the glass explode out. The wind then blew the pieces in the jeep. I understand a rock hitting a windshield and cracking it....."it's a jeep thing" My husband has replaced his windshield on his 2007 JKUR 3 times. This was different.

Haven't seen that on Wranglers but several other vehicles have exploding sunroofs and back windows. I will say my son's 1st generation Ford Focus was known for bad window actuators that would sound like a gun when they failed. I replaced all 4 over the years and one did shatter the door window. I'd guess faulty glass under the right condition or a long shot would be an actuator failure.

Alex,

Thank you for the info, I have contacted Jeep via online chat, I contacted them mainly to make sure the dealer had turned in my information after they inspected the Jeep yesterday. According to Jeep the dealer has not sent them the info so they gave me a case number and transferred me to the Jeep Wave Department. Brenda in that Department took my contact information and they are having a case manager contact me.

I'm glad that you are well
The glass and shrapnel were obviously blown to the outside
I have no doubt that this is a flaw in the manufacture of tempered glass.

An actuator couldn't break a window. If the sunroof or the back glass brakes most likely the cause was a rock that hit. I would say the same for a side window.

Power regulator malfunction maybe? What else could have cause that kind of pressure.
Nah, this is more common than you'd think. Defect in the glass combined with temperature change is usually what does it. I have personally seen it happen 3 different times, 2 times it was on a TV stand, and the other time was my RV.

For the TV stands it was the glass on the doors with no stress on them other than their own weight. In all the cases they made a loud pop like something hit the glass but it was just a spontaneous shatter. Weird stuff.

I assume it is a defect in the tempering process but not sure.

This happened to new yesterday! I was driving my 2019 JL down the freeway and suddenly BOOM! The rear passenger window just exploded. Most of it exploded outward but some fell in. It was moderate weather and all windows were up so it wouldn't have anything to do temperature or word wind pressure. Incredibly scary. I'm just happy my kids weren't in there at the time.

My dad's chev rear window imploded also while in the driveway..... pressure changes due to temperature + window flaw caused it. ...
