Old thread I know, I can’t seem to find any confirmation about how the full time functions actually works within the transfer case. Is it similar to the NP242 or will it be like the 249? The 242 did not have clutches but more of an open differential inside the case so there was nothing to wear out. If that’s the case, I don’t see why it would be any less reliable than the standard transfer case. If there are clutches I know that’s an obvious concern from a reliability standpoint.
Has anybody actually opened one up or seen an exploded view of one?
I read somewhere, don't remember the source, that the full-time uses a clutch pack and part-time uses a chain.

I have not seen one opened up, however a variant was on the 2008-2012 Jeep Liberty so there may be a picture of an opened up one on a Liberty.

The only thing making me question this option for the rubicon is durability. I'm not worried about the CV's, worst case scenario they can be replaced with RCV's. But it seems no one really knows for sure how the rock-track full-time actually functions. I will say though, if they're putting it in all 392's it has to be tough right?

I have it on my JLU, I leave it on 4WD auto and forget it for now, in snow I might pay more attention.
I also have the anti slip option on my blacktop cruiser. ?

I read somewhere on this forum that with the full time transfer case there is an electronic sleeve that goes between the clutch for 4-auto and the mechanical lock on the part time.

Fixing stupid....
I am also curious if there is a difference in how the Auto 4WD is handled between the Selectrac option in the Sahara's vs the Auto option with the RockTrac in the Rubicons.

To save some bucks from sourcing and installing a Selec-Trac transfer case, couldn't a fella elect to swap out the front u-joints with CVs? Sure, I'd still have to manually shift into 4H when needed, but the binding and hopping at low speeds during tight turns (like parking) would be solved.

The binding is front to back not left to right. Part-time transfer cases lock the front and rear driveshafts together, full-time uses a clutch-like system that allow them to decouple.

I'm often occupied, by many things, often at the same time
Remember this is the Selec-Trac II, not the 242 some of us may be (very) familiar with.

Ah - got it! Thanks for the clarification. Guess I'll just have to save my shekels and keep watching eBay for a good MP3022 transfer case, too.

Since I live in Southern California, I wound up getting the regular Rubicon 4WD, not the 4 Auto option.
