Jeep dealership just quoted me $1,800 to replace the parking brake on my 2014 Jeep Sahara (67,000 miles). Said I need shoes and hardware and they come as part of a backing plate. They said the axel, seal and bearing has to be replaced when they pull it out because these components can't be put back in. I have extended warranty that recently covered calipers but I guess it doesn't cover parking brake. $1,800 seems really high. When I Googled it, I saw $300-$400?? TIA

I just watched a video on it, and it looks to be kind of a PITA, but still doable DIY.

I'm kind of curious on how you could wear out the e-brake shoes at only 67,000 miles?

It’s a royal PITA but they can be swapped without pulling the shafts, I’d look for a good non dealer shop, local or family type. A dealer will typically overkill a repair and the shop rates are a lot higher. Someone’s paying for those fancy dealerships……. Us

Parts are less than $100..........Do not need to replace backing plate.

Take it to another dealer or a shop that services brakes.
Parts are a little more expensive than that, and it’s a PITA to do. Just did mine. Shoes, new drum/disks because you probably have a « lip » that might be also swollen by rust, pads (not necessary, but since you need to change the disk, might as well put new pads). Took me 5 hours to remove the driver side drum/disk because the rusted lip would not allow the shoes to slip through…

Just did mine. Parts were about $400 - disk/drums, shoes, pads and a new hardware kit (springs, pins and adjusters). Pita to even dismantle: rust on the lip of the drum being the biggest issue. Took 4 hours to nudge the drum out on the driver side because of that. Installing the springs will make you go mad, especially the springs on the handbrake activation side. Shop for tools before going after it - I didn’t, and probably paid for it in extra time. The rest is fairly easy. The passenger side went easier, because the brake material detached from the shoes, so the drum slided out after one hit from my hammer.

Overall, this could turn into a full week-end kind of job.

Seems to be on part with a lot of folks - mine gave up at 88,000 km - about 50K miles… the brake lining fell off the shoes on the passenger side.
