Is there a specific reason Jeep left the cowl around the wipers unpainted? I don't like the look and would lean towards having it painted immediately.

I wonder if this is something that will change in the second or third year of release and they will come painted.

I was hoping that on the Sahara, it might be painted, but I can't find a pic of a Sahara that is not the dark color to confirm this. Anyone know if the sahara version have a painted cowl?

Is the Cowl plastic or magnesium like the tailgate?

I'm pretty sure it is plastic. The one at the Indy auto show appeared to be plastic, although we could not touch it.

I don't know why you guys think it's painted, it's clearly a plastic insert piece, which sucks.

The unpainted plastic cowl is a retro throwback feature to mimic the 1989-1995 YJ.

Lol! Actually, I thought it looked pretty good on the one at the auto show, even though it looked like plastic.

Before anybody goes and starts cutting their wrists, we should probably have someone confirm its composition, to be certain.

Clearly a personal preference, but I like the black contrast, especially with the Rubicon hood black vents. And anything can be painted.

I don't think many YJs had unpainted cowls.

On the JL, Looks like Jeep at one time painted the cowl or is thinking of doing it the future. The first pic that pops up under the exterior section of the JL page on jeep.com has a red Rubicon with a painted cowl.

The early YJ's had a painted cowl as shown in your image, but it was changed to the unpainted cowl I believe in 1992 when the rear rollbar supports changed from angled to square. Someone I know has an all original red 1995 YJ that he bought in 1996 and his cowl is black plastic, just like its shown in the official Jeep image (1987 date stamp on the picture is incorrect though....its a 1992 model or later due to the configuration of the rollbar).

If the unpainted plastic cowl panel is good enough for John Hammond's fleet of Jurassic Park Jeeps, it should be good enough for any of us....we all know he spared no expense.

It's the intake grille between the hood and the windshield frame.

I love the jeep history knowledge that comes from the forums. Thank you for sharing the YJ tidbit.
