Thinking about a Smittybilt Scout or other options in that price range that can handle a roof top style tent. Sharing of your experiences or thoughts would be appreciated.

I'd consider something besides the smittybuilt, at least untill they do a major redesign. On various groups I've been following, I have seen three failures at the same point, one of them I have attached. I am also in the market for a trailer in around the same price point, and right now I am considering either used or a reconditioned M101. There are a few vendors out there that sell nice M101's and depending on your price point, are similar to the Scout (just with less extras).

More of a DIY trailer build, but have you looked at www.dinoot.com

https://compact-camping-concepts-2.myshopify.com/collections/dinoot-jeep-trailer-style-parts

I built one a few years ago and use it all the time. I don't overland or use it offroad though. It comes in handy for family vacations and typical utility trailer tasks, but a lot of guys build them and use then offroad. I used a Harbor Freight trailer frame, but you can custom build a steel tube frame. Totally customizable. Lots of people put tents on them, too.

Fun project and you can build it however you want

Hereā€™s mine loaded up to go to the Outer Banks

I was looking for trailers recently and am considering these:

https://www.spacetrailers.com/ - about half the price and weight of the Scout but also has a low load capacity (1000 pounds) - I liked that you can stand it up for storage but not sure how rugged it will be off-road.

And these two which were a little more $ than the Smitty but I thought looked nice:

And thereā€™s Turtleback, but theyā€™re pretty pricey!

Xventure trailers are basically civilian versions of current military hummer trailers.

Patriot Campers is an Australian company that makes some innovative trailers and bed trays for pick-ups. They are available in the US.

If you want to see some of these things, Overland Expo is a great place to see these things and get hands on. There are a lot of options out there, some are better than others obviously. Another great resource for these types of trailers is Expedition Portal

Here is an article by the "experts" regarding overland trailers.

I welded two YJ tubs together so that the front had a tailgate as does the rear. I put a 23g gas tank where the normal tank would be and then topped it with some plywood to keep things dry and dust free. It has 19 inches of ground clearance and uses a pintle hook. I need to make some changes to it but all in all it works pretty well.

Personally I think towing a trailer is a PITA if the plan is to take it on ruff trails. Also I have plans to go to alaska and really dont know if I want to haul a trailer all that way in what would otherwise be a fun peppy ride with that new 3.6 with an 8 speed.

Still it's hard to deny some of the advantages of bringing a capable trailer. Loading up the JL 4 door up to the gills for 3 people is almost impossible for a month long trip and putting on one of those skeletal cages to carry crap on top doesnt appeal to me at all vs a trailer.

THE greatest use for these things IMO is having a basecamp. Drive it there, find your super remote out of the way spot and set up. Leave it there and go explore. You bring all kinds of stuff you couldnt otherwise. One of those fold out adventure tents, generators, HUGE cooler, extra everything to make the adventure more comfortable and FUN.

Make sure it has a brake setup. On the lightweight ones you dont really have to have it but do it anyway
Get the swivel hitches. I forget the name but they are quiet and work way better then what I have.
Make sure it has good suspension. Some outfits say you dont really need to but having to go REAL slow to pull a trailer on ruff fast forest road due to suspension limitations is annoying. I need to make the aforementioned changes and the reason I bring it up.

I'd rather not have to pull a trailer but it sure does have a cool factor and once setup at some unreal spot with everything you brought really makes it worth it. Yeah it's likely going to alaska. lol
