Morton of course is right. Money wise it's almost always smarter not to go new or newer when you have a paid off rig.

Research shows if you do buy new and you keep a vehicle 10 years you can retire 5 years earlier then someone who keeps buying ( likely leasing too) vehicles every 3 years or thereabouts.

The OP has easily met that threshold. If the rig still works and meets his needs, run it into the ground. If it's problematic, doesnt suit his lifestyle any longer, whatever, go new or newer. You've done your do diligence in keeping your present vehicle, the ball is in your court.
Yeah I think it would foolish to purchase new or used just for a known 3 year period, just doesn't make sense at all to me, maybe im crazy..

Evidentially there is a want to scratch that itch but I don't think its worth it in this case what-so-ever. Just wait 3 more years and buy your fully loaded whatever.. if it blows up between now and then, then yeah go get something in the interim, but only if you HAVE to. Hell the upfront maintenance costs he has are almost nothing..

So, I'm going to go into as much detail as possible here in an effort to help you.

You probably don't want to hear what I have to say.

Before I begin I will say I have been in your shoes at least twice that I can remember and BOTH times, as I recall, I regretted my decisions.

So here goes...
________________________

You have the ITCH to get into something newer (we've ALL been there)
________________________

Current State:

Worst case scenario.

Your current vehicle is paid off.
It's 13 years old (it's OLD).
Has 130K+ miles (meaning average).
Interior is 'good' condition (meaning average at best).

Needs the following:
  1. Tires
  2. Brakes (PADS & ROTORS)
  3. A/C (COMPRESSOR & REFILL)
  4. Oil Change
You're probably not going to get anymore now for a trade-in than you would in (3) years believe it or not at this point.
________________________

You clearly have a goal of purchasing a JLUR in 2022.
________________________

2006 JEEP LIBERTY 4WD SPORT:
130K MILES
'GOOD' CONDITION
ROUGH TRADE-IN: $1,400
AVERAGE TRADE-IN: $2,100

2003 JEEP LIBERTY 4WD SPORT:
180K MILES
'GOOD' CONDITION
ROUGH TRADE-IN: $500
AVERAGE TRADE-IN: $1,100
________________________

The difference in 3 years:

ROUGH TRADE-IN: $900
AVERAGE TRADE-IN: $1,000

NOT MUCH IF ANYTHING..
________________________

Upfront fixes SWAG cost:
  1. TIRES: $419 Shipped + $15 per tire to install = $479 (Yes, you can get (3) years out of them.)
  2. BRAKES: PADS ($30 set) & ROTORS ($25 ea) ($100) DIY Install (SUPER EASY) = $130
  3. A/C: COMPRESSOR ($650 parts/labor) REFILL (Included in Compressor replacement) = $650
  4. OIL CHANGE: $80
TOTAL (and it doesn't all have to be done at once) = $1,339

Hell your A/C Compressor may not even need replacing..
________________________

SWAG cost:

2018 JLUS USED W/14K MILES = $28,000 - $31,000

2018 JLUS NEW = $29,000-$35,000
2019 JLUS NEW = $29,000-$35,000

(all just to drive a new-to-you vehicle for 3 years??..)
________________________

Moral of the story, keep what you have for -3 more years and save lots of money on interest/payments.

Once you knock out some of those maintenance items all you'll need is a few oil changes and maybe a battery over the next 3 years and I can tell you that it will NOT cost you $28,000-$35,000..
Basically the OP is looking at depreciation verses repair cost.

I might be reading your post wrong? A '18 or '19 JL will not cost the entire $29K-$35K over 36 months. The JL will be worth roughly 70% after 36 months. OP will pay the depreciated amount of probably 30%. About $10K devided by 36 months = $277 a month. Add interest, taxes, insurance.

I agree with Morton, but add this.

Make $500 payments each month to yourself in a seperate saving account.

$500X36 month is $18,000. Not counting interest that gets paid to you.

The more you can pay yourself the better. Put that money towards your 2022 Jeep.

You only pay on depreciated value on a lease option. Either way your repair costs wont be 10k.

it sounds like he want to purchase though. not sure but the math doesn't add up for me for it to make sense.

id roll the dice and stick with no payment for another 3 years.

Lease or purchase, there is still equity after 36 months.

I’d start with a list of required features. For me, I’ll never own another vehicle without adaptive cruise control. So 18’s are out. If your feature list can be satisfied with those offered on the ‘18’s. And if you really plan to update in a couple years anyway, then a sweet deal on an ‘18 seems to make more fiscal sense than buying a top dollar ‘19 and taking the depreciation hit.

Get a new 18 or a new 19, I wouldn't get used.

Life is too short to drive shit you don't want to be driving.

YOLO lol

But I am not the best person to ask lol, I wanted to be back in a wrangler, so that is what I did, I didn't GAF about anyone's opinion or advice.

I am Happier, do what makes you happy.

Or drive the Liberty for another 3 years and let it suck the rest of your soul away.

Get one now, worry about 2022 in 2022.

You know you want to do it now...listen to yourself.
Sometimes you gotta do wtf you wanna do.

It won’t pan out at least I don’t think it would. There might be equity but your still paying more than $200 a month to principal & interest either way you go.

I thought all the wranglers came with 44s front and rear now...no?
Nope. Rubicon is still the only model to get front & rear Dana 44's standard

Dana 30 front/ Dana 35 rear are standard.

Dana 44 rear is bundled with the Trac-Lok LSD

If happiness is the only variable then yes. But there's money and the places it needs to go, kids college, retirement, on and on. Does the current vehicle meet his needs....on and on.

Life is short but buying a vehicle to make you happy is fleeting if other stuff isnt taken care of first. A smart person sets themselves up in life and celebrates that long term thinking by doing the fun things like a new jeep, vacation home, extravagant vacations, etc.

Bouncing off thoughts and ideas on a forum is a good thing.
