Open cavity in rear after bumper swap

When you remove the plastic at the bottom of the rear bumpers to change the bumper or clear bigger tires, it opens up a cavity that goes right up to the wiring behind the drivers tail-light. I can only imagine the amount of mud/water that could be thrown up there and who knows what terrible things it could do to the electronics.

Out of curiosity, how many of you have left it as open? Any issues?
If you didn't leave it, what did you do to protect the openness of that area from mud/dust and water?
