7 months ago I traded my Jkur in for a jlur. Within 3 weeks, I was ready to change the oil. I called the dealer and spoke to 3 people all of who gave me 3 different oil weights, amounts, and oil filter. I guess the new JL is indeed different then the JK. It's a microscopic difference, but they said it is different. I have changed the oil on her 3 times now and last week my oil filter housing cracked and dumped my oil out. The part is not available anywhere for 3 weeks because it is different then the JK.
I am running into problems with 3 dealers here in the North West thinking the JK parts will work with the new JL. Has anyone else been having this problem? Does anyone have a dealer or service center they can recommend that knows the differences in the JK and JL? Is there an aftermarket oil filter housing available that is not plastic? Sorry for the shot gun of questions, I'm new

Kevin, Who told you that the JL part was not the same as the one for the JK? What are they saying the part # is ?

I was told by a local tech that the cap for the JK and JL are the same. I must have been mis-informed...?

By the way, when installing that part, torque to no more then 18 Ft/lbs. Be sure to install slowly and carefully tighten with your hand, first, to assure you do not cross thread it during install. Take care not to over tighten as the cap will crack.

Is the part number for the 3.6L in a 2018 JL oil filter cover different then the oil filler cap for the say 2014-2017 JK with the 3.6L ?

Can you have the OP out in getting this part?

@Kevinsjlruby .. Hopefully, you /we can get clarification on this from @AllMoparParts.com a sponsor here. They have been very helpful to forum members here in the past.

The JL oil filter cap 68191350AA is shared with the JK as well as many other models and even engines as well.

hope this helps,
Benny

That’s good to know! I may just get a spare.
I have one on the shelf in the garage. Got it in 2014. Never had the occasion to use it.

As mentioned, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. The new filter comes with a new O-ring. The O-ring should be swapped out each oil change, and the cap should be torqued to spec, not cranked down hard.

Between this, and the way they are over-filling the crankcases, I'm starting to really wonder if I should skip my last 3 free synthetic oil changes and just do it at home anyhow. Geez...

It should all be the same for the jeeps ,ram, Durango. Deffently sounds like you over tighten it. I ran 5w20 pennzoil in my 2013 3.6.

@Bubba33

I have both JL and JK's in the household so all I keep and use around here is 5w20.

No reason to feel locked into using 0w20 with the JL.

Actually, more often then not, I find the 5w20 more readily available and less expensive then the 0w20.

Sure, I would not, not use 0w20 but seriously doubt I will ever use it, unless I save $ doing so.

I had a 2018 Dodge Caravan loaner when my JL was in the shop. The Caravan had a Penastar V6 and I noticed it used 5W20 oil. In addition it did not have ESS and could use E85.

Not sure what you post is trying to say but... ESS has little to do with why and whether a vehicle uses 0w20 or 5w20.

Google and read, regarding the difference between 0w20 and 5w20.

After this you yourself, will undoubtedly see, there is no reason why you cannot use 5w20 in your 3.6L JL or 0w20. Actually, after you read/research you may say, no way I will use 0w20 and from now on use only 5w20.

As for me, I use either or in my JL.... I use Pennzoil Platinum and will buy whichever (0w20 or 5w20) is available and less expensive..

In the JK, I only use the 5w20.

@allieboy

No, the oil pan plug on the 3.6 L does not.

IF you install a Fumoto Oil Drain Valve, DO, use the blue washer that comes with the valve.

Do you use Fumoto? Some complain that the oil cant drain completely. Thoughts?

@allieboy

I have used them on Wrangler's for over 10 years. Never any issues with them.

Have also used them on heavy equipment, cars, trucks, aircraft and a Harley.

Using now on my JL and a JK.

I'm not concerned if say a slight tad of oil might not drain out ... a non-issue....

Read here if you are curious about the Fumoto Oil Drain Valve on a JL You will see caveats listed/mentioned in that thread.
