Vertical distance from the bumper appears to be the same, difference is distance from the tailgate to wheel mounting surface.

Gregj
So with a wider Rubi KO2 tire and a slightly deeper spare tire bracket, does that mean the tire will still contact the rubber tailgate bumpstops ?

Yes, they are in contact with the tire just not compressed nearly flat like they were with the 285/70-17 on the Sport carrier.

In preparation for adding Rubi tires/wheels on my Sport, I went ahead a bought a take-off Rubi spare tire carrier for cheap. To add to Greglā€™s info I included some images to help show the differences in the brackets between the Sport and Rubicon. The difference is in the mounting surface depth from the tailgate body to the wheel mounting surface as well as the height of the upper portion of the carrier that holds the brake light.

I went through this a couple months ago when I put a 285/70-17 spare on. Not only are the carriers different the chmsl mount is also different.

Sport on the left Rubicon on the right, the loop the brake light on the Rubicon mounts too is also bigger to position the light higher.

Any chance you measured the camera body to see if there is a difference in length as it extends out from the carrier?

I don't believe they are different as i used the Sport camera and base in the Rubicon Carrier. There should be no difference as the distance from the wheel mounting surface to the end of the camera base doesn't change.

Hi

I have a JLU Sahara that had the famous rubbing issue after installing the metal rear bumper and Rubicon 17inchs KO2. I bought a JL Rubicon Tire Carrier and it did solved my problem. The Tire Carrier didnā€™t came with the camera so I took the one from my Sahara Tire Carrier and it did fit like a charm.

I got rid of my RC bracket, which was bought new only a year ago. Was not happy about the result and anyway the bracket was already full of rust and chipping paint. If you are wondering if you should go with a bracket instead, weā€™ll think twice and avoid the pain and go with the JL Rubicon Tire Carrier.

The Rubicon Tire Carrier Part #68297540AD.

@Gregj, thank you!

Then how does a rubicon carry a 35 and a sport/sahara can't if the carrier doesn't actually sit higher up?

The loop that the brake light sits on is smaller on the Sport carrier, on mine I just mounted it in the bottom hole only. It has two holes in each leg and I just moved it up so it only uses the one screw instead of both of them. Been fine for well over a year.

The Rubicon carrier does in fact hold the tire up higher than the Sport/Sahara carrier due to the difference in the shape of the carrier body. Looking at the profile of these carriers you can see how the mounting surface on the Sport/Sahara carrier drops down slightly unlike the Rubicon carrier. This is in addition to the taller brake light mount shown above in this thread.

Are there any updated part numbers on the different versions here? Does a Willys get a sport or Rubicon version?

For reference I have '21 Willys with 68474050AC

Well I just went through all this. Rubicon 2020 tire carrier part number I got: 68474051AB (I see it's changed to AC on mopar parts sites, likely for 2021)
