Odometer oddity (with photos)

This is a recent anomaly with my 2018 JL Unlimited.
When starting up, sometimes my odometer reads all nines, as in 999999 miles when the actual mileage is 20674.

Shutting down and restarting doesn't return it to normal, but if I start driving the odometer eventually corrects itself.
I mentioned this to my service tech at my last appointment and he told me he has seen that before and that the service folks would check for any codes (none were found).

Any ideas?

My previous jeep [2018] did that same thing. It would go back to normal in a couple miles or so. Told my local dealer tech about it, he checked for codes and reflashed the computer . Good to go after that.

Ha, the Herman Cain (rip) tax plan! Wife’s 2018 did it too, there is an update that fixes it.

Good catch.

The first photo was taken while I was still in my garage.
The second photo was taken about 3 miles down the road at a red traffic light.

On a trip today, stopped to get fuel. Once I started up 999999 came up on the odometer. Called my Service Advisor and he said "common issue, bring it in when you want so we can do a re-flash of the ECM". As soon as hung up the original mileage appeared.

I have same issue with all 9s showing up and then clears. I also noticed the trip meters were reading much higher than they should. I noticed it once hand then after a restart it went back to what appeared to be normal mileage. Do you think the flash update would cure this also?

Yes, that is exactly how ours was acting.

Just wanted to add this observation, the 999999 appears right after I refuel to "full" and returns back to normal in a few miles.

Another thing to note. I took it to two different dealerships and was told the flash was not needed because it is current, no update needed. But I needed new instrument cluster. Both dealerships said the same thing. It’s covered with my warranty, hope this fixes the issue.

Mine showed 6666 last night. I told my wife this Jeep must be being tracked by the Four 6's Ranch
I was actually just at the 6,666km mark though.

True, but at least it wouldn't be so many km's in such a short time of ownership, 2.5 months
At this rate I'm gonna mile it out too fast for my warrantee period.
I just love driving it so much that I only drive the Ram 3500 to haul water right now and the Jeep goes everywhere else. Helps that the Jeep only uses half the fuel as well though.
By the way, I'm on TDR as well with the same name.
