Does anyone out there hear the rear driveshaft clunking when going on a trail at low speed (10-20 mph) mostly when you let off the gas and then back on the gas? Not a constant noise, more intermittent. Is this normal or should I bring it to the shop?

You might get those U-Joints checked out. Could be nothing, could be something.

Could just be the backlash in the ring and pinion, but I don't think it would be loud enough for you to hear it.

It shouldn’t do what you are describing I wouldn’t think. I know the driveshaft boot can get nicked and have seen several torn on JK’s after trail runs. They make a lot of noise and vibrate when that though. Make sure you didn’t knock a weight off. If there is no obvious damage (which is on you), then I would make sure it’s nice and clean and take it to the dealer.

Of course, I was under there checking everything out making sure everything’s tight, had shop re tighten all lift components, when I turn the driveshaft with my hand back and forth that little bit of turn makes the exact same noise I hear on the trail. I just don’t know what the tolerance is supposed to be for that.
That's the backlash between the ring and pinion. The driveshaft shouldn't rotate back and forth more than 1/4 inch at most and you definitely shouldn't be able to hear it making any significant noise.

I’m having the same issue. Did you find a solution?

Could be slop in the driveline. I have a 6 speed and in 4 low if theirs still a load on the drive train when I push the clutch in it makes a lot of noise.

That was in my Sahara, and it end up being the knock in the rear differential that everyone’s having issues with. There’s a thread on it in here somewhere.

Did you ever find out what was causing this noise? My dealer said wait till it gets worse. They won’t cover under warranty because they don’t know where this noise is coming from.

I’m having the same issue and it’s driving me crazy. Dealer hasn’t been able to get to the bottom of it and just gave up and told me to kick rocks until it gets worse. Something is definitely wrong with these Dana 44s, it’s not just the LSD that suffers from it my rubi has it too.

I was really hoping to find the solution in this thread :(
