Disabled vet here too. 22 years as Special Operations Pilot. I drove from Colorado Springs to Dallas straight through not long after a long treatment of chemo. On the way down, I started getting pain in my right shoulder. (This was in my GMC Hd 2500, very nice ride). To get to the chase I spent 8 days in the hospital in Rockwall, Tx with a pulmany embolism. (Blood clot in the right lung.)

Not trying scare you. But if the pain gets more intense when you take a deep breath in, get to a doctor.

And yes, take wallets out of your back pockets, all the time. I went to a front pocket wallet about years ago at the behest if a flight surgeon and a lot of problems went away.

I'm 6'5" and find that my shoulders and upper back ache when driving my JL, but not in my JK. I tend to agree with your observation that due to the seat sitting higher and there being less room overall for the driver, I am likely subconsciously slouching to avoid hitting the sound bar. I've played with the seat, but just can't get to as comfortable driving position as I have in my JK. I'm really hoping someone fabricates seat rails that bring the seat down 1"-2".
Raising a seat is easier than lowering it down.

Unfortunately, there is very limited space under the seat with the floor pan being what it is. The front right corner of the driver seat bolts right onto the transmission hump.

Agreed. There's a thread with an option to lower the existing seat brackets, but it requires cutting up the seat rail. Not sure I'm ready to go that direction quite yet.

I see you’re a retired Soldier too. What’d you do?

And thank you as well.
A number of things in thirty years, my friend. A few: combat medic, field artillery fire direction specialist, SHORAD air defense platoon sergeant.

My back ached the first week in my JL. I think the head rests tilt too far forward and I can't get comfortable for long. I came from a JK and never had problems. My back eventually adjusted but I would not recommend a JL for comfort. I've thought about putting in Cherokee head rests maybe?

Had a 2019 Rubicon JL and now a 20 Gladiator Rubicon in BOTH I am finding my right shoulder blade aches while driving it. None of my previous JK, TJ or YJ or XJ units since 1992 have ever done this. Looking for some ideas or help I'm perplexed. I'm 6'4" and 215 so not overweight or don't think I am :)

Any comments suggestions or similar exp?

Thanks

Have you tried using the jack when changing your tires? Or lift with your legs and not the back.

Truly sorry you are having the pain. Something about the way you are sitting is getting you in a pinch...probably at the base of your neck. You might try putting a frozen water bottle in a sock (clean) and laying on it placed at the base of your neck.

I believe this is directly related to the angle of the head rest. They extend too far forward and most humans cannot contort their head/neck that way. So you end up leaning to one side and that effects your shoulders.

If you’re taking long trips and find that you need to constantly correct the wondering steering, suggest talking to your dealership about the fix that came out 3 months ago as that could be the cause of your pain. Good luck

"gangsta lean
A common driving position in which the driver holds the wheel with his left hand while leaning to his right toward the passenger seat, usually bobbing his head or bumpin' with the beat. It's a pretty badass way to drive. This move works best in a Chevy Caprice or any pimp-style car with a 3-person front seat.

"...with a hellafied gangsta lean, gettin' funky on da mike like an ol' bunch of collard greens..." -Snoop Dogg

Sammy was gangsta leanin' so hard yesterday that his head was partially out the passenger window. What a pimp."

Are you leaning into the center console? I noticed it doesn't have much in the way of padding, it actually hurts my elbow on long drives. It's gotta be something with ergonomics. Possibly you are one of the people who's back doesn't like these wrangler seats, I know back problems can lead to shoulder pain also. Or is it possible that you don't have enough leg room and are twisting up while you drive? I'm only 6'1" and I feel any less leg room would be torture on myself.
You might put the lumbar support at full or a pillow behind your lower back. Like said above, if your back isn’t right, it can oddly affect other parts of your body. I had knee pain from a bad hip. I didn’t see if you had leather seats but I find them stiffer than the cloth.
