Time to upgrade our Trail Comms in our Jeep Wrangler JL! This will also work for the Gladiator JT Jeep. Having good Trail Communication is a must. CB Radios are fading out, HAM Radios (Amateur Radio) require a test, but GMRS has good range, clear sound and no test is needed. BUT, you do need a get a GMRS license. Not to worry, it is easy to get, 10-15 mins to fill out a form, $35, and you are good for 10 years! Link below for instructions and form.

This is great. I've been using a Baofeng BF-F8HP handheld radio because I can use it for Ham, MURS, FRS, and GMRS bands and receive NOAA weather, among other functions. It's the Swiss Army knife of radios (and cheap), but the power is pretty limited at 7 or 8 watts (band-dependent). Although I enjoy using the radio, I have limited experience with vehicle installations, which is why I haven't purchased anything more suitable for a mobile configuration. This is the first custom set-up I've seen for the JL, and the install looks pretty easy, so I might try this out. Look forward to seeing feedback from actual users first, but I'm pretty sure it'll be a hit. Thanks for sharing and happy Jeepin'!

Interestingly, I just called Rugged Radios to see if they offer a similar kit for their dual-band Ham radio. Although they don't advertise one, the representative advised that they could just swap out the GMRS for the Ham radio. Only issue, is that they don't offer a two-band antenna, so I'd have to swap out VHF and UHF antennae every time I wanted to switch bands. Obviously, there are plenty of dual band antennae from other sources, but not sure if they'd be tuned to this specific radio or compatible with the supplied body mount in the kit.

Apologies to those who are only interested in GMRS, but I thought this might be helpful for those considering a similar Ham config.

No that is great information. Thanks for sharing. You can get the JL bracket solo, and install any radio you want on it. Would be a pain to switch it out back and forth though to run two radios. The antenna should be easy to swap though. I think if you have the hand held Ham, and the 45watt GMRS mounted in the Jeep, you should be pretty well covered for different groups.

Just a personal opinion. I have both HAM and GMRS licenses. My advice is to forget getting the HAM radio if you're not licensed. The GMRS radio is a great alternative. It has good power and clarity that rivals HAM in the UHF band and all you have to do is purchase the license which is very reasonably priced. A HAM license has to be earned by gaining knowledge about radios and electronics and cannot just be purchased from the FCC. If you want a HAM radio, please put in the work and effort to get a license.

Agree 100%. In my case, I haven't needed GMRS, but use Ham quite often (and yes...I'm licensed). For those who aren't licensed, buying a Ham radio would be a total waste....and illegal to transmit.

Same here. But then again, I off road with a bunch of hams. In a couple months, I'm heading to CO to go off roading and that group all have GMRS so I'll be on that radio then.
