I was ecstatic when I was finally able to drive my brand new 2020 JLU home on July 30th. On August 15th I noticed acceleration issues and took it straight back to the dealership. I'm being told that there is misfire on cylinder one and it needs the engine replaced due to faulty spark plug installation?? It has 600 miles on it. I am beside myself, I've had it for a little over 2 weeks and already a new engine? Do I have this replaced or do I start the process for a new replacement Jeep? Please help... Any advice would be much appreciated. Below is a portion of the email that I received from the service department today.

"Since the vehicle was received so late on Saturday, we were not able to get in and diagnose this issue until Monday morning. Diagnostic vehicle scan report showed a Cylinder 1 misfire code that was active, thus causing the running concern you were experiencing. Our tech removed the spark plug from cylinder #1 and noticed that the ground (metal hook that creates spark when the electrode on the plug fires) was broken off and missing. At this point, since the vehicle was so new, our technician reached out to FCA engineering regarding next step. FCA responded with complete engine replacement as the repair for this concern assuming that the metal ground from the spark plug may have caused damage to the engine internally.
An engine was placed on order 08/17/20 am and shows an updated ETA date this morning of 08/24/2020. Although this date may change slightly, it is a good indicator that the engine is no longer on back order and is being released for distribution.
Per my conversation with Jason this morning, I understand that you may no longer want this vehicle and be interested in switching to another Jeep. If this is your decision, we can reach out to FCA and get that process started. I will get the proper people involved and try to make that happen for you.
Please understand that the proposed repair will be a complete engine assembly and will be installed by a factory trained technician and will be quality checked before releasing to you. A loaner vehicle will be provided until your vehicle is repaired. I will make this process as easy for you as I possibly can. Feel free to reach out to me with questions or concerns."

I wouldn't be too concerned with the replacement engine. It sounds like the dealer is doing everything possible to make the situation right for you. If you ordered the Jeep exactly the way you wanted it, I'd let them put the new engine in and enjoy it.

At least you’re dealership is replacing it and not trying to turn it around on you as if you were complicit in the engine needing replaced. Thus far, they’re solid engines. I’d be more concerned that they let the best techs handle the swap.

I can’t even justify why a new Jeep is necessary at this point.

I'd ask for a NEW Jeep. Two weeks and 600 miles has to be a new record. That new motor at 600 miles is going to be on your vehicle's history forever.

First thing you need to do is contact @JeepCares and document your complaint. Then go through the motions and roll with the punches. Be ready for a long and arduous process.

Hope you get things resolved.

Good luck!

PS - I agree with the others, your dealer seems very willing to help. That is a key part in all of this.

Incredibly bad luck. I can understand wanting a new vehicle, but a new motor isn't a terrible solution. Sounds like your dealer is on top of things and that is a huge help as they will be key no matter which direction you end up going. Best of luck and hopefully you'll be back in a Wrangler soon.

Dealer is definitely trying their hardest to help you. Credit to them for their professionalism esp when something is not their fault. I would recommend the engine swap versus new Jeep because of how the dealer handled the situation. A new Jeep from factory may take much longer vs an Engine swap.

No doubt i'd be upset and want a new Jeep but after thinking it over an engine swap is way better then a rebuild and most likely never give you trouble down the road. A similar incident happened to a buddy of mine with his new dodge ram 5 years later he has 80,000 plus miles on it, no problems.

I'd ask for a NEW Jeep.
I agree fully. Having an engine replaced will potentially impact too many systems to list. And, I've been through it. Save yourself from the heartaches.

Thanks for all of the advice. I am going with the new engine install. The reason I picked Glendale CJDR as my dealership was because of their outstanding service department and customer service. They are really trying their best to make this as easy as possible and I couldn't be more grateful. Looking like I will be reunited with my Willy by the end of next week!!

Do mechanical things break? Yes. Can they break right away? Yes. Jeeps decision what to do. Your decision to try to complain to them. Ask who will do the replacement work - a new mechanic or an experienced one that has done it before.

That dealer is going to be great no matter which way you decide to go. So that won’t make a difference.

Think it well. If you have any problems with the Jeep in the future, you will regret no having gotten a new one when you had the chance.

There is no way in hell that he will get a new vehicle. Ever. Period. Full stop.

18 years ago we had a new home built. During construction I came in one afternoon and heard water gushing. A pipe had burst flooding inside the wall and the floor of the hall, bedroom, and hall closet. I didn’t get a whole new house. I got a repair to the pipe, walls, and flooring.

Getting a new engine is a legitimate solution to this issue. I’m glad they quickly offered that solution without a fight. OP can consider himself lucky in that respect.

My 2016 needed to be rebuilt (2.6L Penstar valve issue) and I never noticed a thing after it was done. Dealers are no longer like they used to be. I’d get a new engine and keep loving the Jeep.
