I folded my windshield down once, just to see how it worked. Not at all useful like it was on my CJ-7, so this was likely the last time it will happen. On the CJ, it did help with visibility going up and down steep stuff, but the bars on the JL negates any benefit. Might be useful for any dash removal / wiring stuff down the line, but otherwise a feature I could live without.

Retired and loving it!
Folded it down once to watch fireworks. Kind of nice for that. Probably never again though. Honestly if they had a solid roof and non-detachable doors that'd be fine by me. Of course, others really like all the removable stuff.
I folded down the wimdshield on my '46 CJ2A once. Once! Took it for a short drive running around 25-mph. I needed goggles instead of sunglasses.

Folding the windshield down sounds cool in theory, but on modern Jeeps it’s more of a “because we can” feature than something actually practical. Once you factor in the ACC box, the sensors, and all the extra steps… it kind of defeats the purpose.

If I couldn't take the doors off or take the top down I wouldn't buy a jeep.
The ability to do so is 100% a jeep thing and my doors are rarely on all summer.
I will probably never put the front window down.

I met Mark Allen a few years ago in Toledo, and I gave him grief about the awkward tie-down mechanism for the windshield. I love dropping the windshield when it’s hot enough (90+), but before I could use practically anything at all to do so. As I joked to him, I could use shoelaces in the absence of anything else.

I’ve driven 60mph on the freeway with the windshield down on the LJ, but I’d never trust the JL tie down at that speed.

I thought the OG purpose of the folding windshield, besides making a Jeep easier for the military to ship, was so you can shoot forward at enemies.

IMO it’s a worthless feature in civilian Jeeps of today.

Agree the newer Jeeps shouldn't have it. The tech and shape just doesn't lend itself to it. I'm sure it was on one of the lists at Jeep of "must haves" when they redesigned it in 2018. Like solid axles, removable doors, and removable hard top in pieces.

As much as I think the idea of it is super cool, I hope that they don't keep this feature for the next gen.
Sacrilege!

Jeep makes the fold down windshield to make it easier for Safelite technicians to frequently replace the "shatterproof" Gorilla glass...lol

the biggest practicality of folding down a windshield is so that your view isn't obstructed by dirt and mud landing on a windshield.

as for the other point, i can't imagine the view on the JL is any worse than my tj with the front half cage.

in any case, i'd rather fold down my windshield than have adaptive cruise control. i wonder if it can be removed from my willys without causing the computer to panic. having that square there is dumb.

I would not drive with the windshield folded down because it would be hot wearing a full face helmet and I would look stupid. Imagine all those cracked windshields, then imagine the windshield not being there.

As for the feature, this one could leave Jeep world and I wouldn't mind. The only time I would consider folding it down would be to make installing something easier. I think I have removed the cover for the stupid collision box from the glove box knowing it was taking up space and will likely never be used.

Yep, the few times I ever drove with the windshield down, was in an M38 back in the 80's and haven't done it since! Some people claim it provides better visibility while driving off road, but I haven't experienced a situation where this was necessary. IMO, it's not worth the effort or risk of damage in the JL's configuration, but to each his/her own.

Honestly if you're concerned about it changing the gas mileage, I think there are other places. The Jeep has almost no air dam and a giant gap between the bottom of body and the ground. Ever notice how every pickup truck has a giant plastic skirt in the front that basically kills the ground clearance? Yea that would make a big change in the gas mileage.

The giant chunky tires also kill gas mileage. The bigger and heavier, the worse.

I'm not sure you'd gain much of anything by making the windshield fixed, at least not without killing the shape of the jeep. Perhaps something like the FJ cruiser or the hummer ev? But even the bronco has a fairly flat windshield.
A cow is more aerodynamic than a Jeep...
