Just received my AUX button kit. I'll be installing it myself.

My question is, the instructions say I have to register the AUX button functionality online with my VIN. They also say I have to use a flash programmer to "turn on" the functionality in my system.

Anyone do this? Is this true?

Yes, install of the Aux Switches necessitates a PCM flash. No flash and switches will not work..

Dealer will charge you $125+- to do.

You can also very easily do the programming yourself with the TazerJL programmer. The TazerJL will cost you just under $300 with the forum discount or the military discount

ZAutomotive who brings us the TazerJL is a forum sponsor.

So, research TazerJL before you pay the dealer to do the programming.
Read here: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/tazer-jl-more-than-just-a-tire-size-programmer.8746/

By the way, the TazerJL can disable ESS, Enable foglights on with High beams, Program tire sizes, Disable TPMS, Enable Aux switches and much much more.

My brother in law and I installed the aux kit in his JLU. Install is fairly easy. Just have the proper tools to remove the wire from the harness. As far as flashing the computer, his dealer charged him $55.
