Kind of in same boat, but not wanting to add amps/sub (well trying not to, and I have 2 12s sitting in the garage with a 1000w alpine amp). I don't want the electrical exposure to the elements, and trying to keep it simple audio-wise..
It seems the stock 4" speakers are in some kind of ported enclosure. It seems some have upgraded these to 6.5" component mid-bass speakers, and maintained the port, is that right? Otherwise, would it be better to get a coaxial 4"-6.5" and use that in the ported enclosure thingy?
I've already upgraded my factory tweeters to 3.5" JL Audio coaxials and now they kind of outplay everything.
I'd like to get some more mid-bass and I'm worried coaxials won't give me that, but maybe some midbass drivers 5.25 or 6.5" if I could fit them, would work? I'm trying to avoid installing a sub and amps, and just want to maintain stock head unit power.
