Last night while pressure washing the Jeep I was getting all around the knuckle area on the front axle and the axle "dust shield" spun off. It's the plastic part that sits around the axle shaft right where it comes out of the axle housing. It has fins on it and it turns out it is two pieces that snap together. I got that sucker spinning fast enough that the force of the spin separated the two pieces, rocketing one at my stomach and sending the other one who knows where.

What’s its purpose though?
It's a dust shield to keep debris out of the axle tube. On the front axle the seals around the shaft are all the way in towards the diff where as on the rear axle they are right out at the end.
Typically on the front the seals will wear out quicker because debris gets into the tube and messes with them. You can get aftermarket seals that go out on the ends of the axle and seal it just like the rear.
The plastic crappy ones from the factory may not do much but it's better than nothing.

Jeep was totally fine after the incident. I, on the other hand, had to hobble myself over to the nearest Urgent Care where they confirmed it was just a mild flesh wound and would heal in 3 to 4 weeks.

Maybe you should leave it in you stomach and it will keep the dust out of your navel.

The thought crossed my mind but then I would have nowhere to store my 3 daily M&Ms.
