Im currently in the same situation and remember like it was yesterday when I put 33s on my jk. I was VERY disappointed with the performance.
A stock JL comes with 31 inch tires that weight 32 Pounds.
33 inch tires are usually E rating with a weight of 50-65 plus pounds.
That's 20-30 additional pounds on EACH TIRE!

Im going to go with a nice set of 33x10.50r17 toyos and a 4.56 re-gear on my JL when I get enough coin. 8th gear should be Purrrfect with that ratio. They the lightest 33 I could find. 50 pounds.

Tuner...
Tires...
Re-gear..
$3000 dollars later... :crying:

33" KO2s made zero difference to my performance.

Stock JL’s come with 31.5” tires. The jump to 33’s is around 1 inch, or even less in the case of the 285/70r17 ko2’s.

Well according to most of the people who commented here there is a real hit. And those K02 way 58 pounds a tire compared to the stock tire weight of 32 pounds.

Maybe so, just posting my experience. Most posts I've seen report no noticeable difference but your mileage may vary. Literally!

Update! I carried the Jeep in to have the speedo recalibrated. The dealership kept the Jeep through the weekend. They could not duplicate the rear brake issue but they assumed that it had something to do with resetting the abs system after a bcm update. They told me that the abs usually needs a reset after any other configuration updates. BS ?? I DON'T KNOW. I picked it up Monday afternoon and in the 20 mile ride home it was performing great. It went to 8th gear again and would only occasionally downshift to 7th. The gas milage is now showing 22 at 60mph. At 50mph ,it is around 28mpg. This is very good news to me! Now let's hope nothing else happens with this thing. I still have to carry it to another dealer for a second opinion on the engine knock. Will update that in the thread on 3.6 sound at idle. Thanks to all of you who pushed to get the speedo recal'd.
Wait sooo if i take my jl back to the dealership
I was also told that a re-cal would fix potential ABS issues after changing out my tires. So at least my dealership is consistent with your's in that it does have some crossover with the ABS systems on the JLs.

I can say that (even with the manual) I did notice a difference in power & fuel-economy after they updated the Jeep for the Rubi-Takeoffs. I'm only seeing 22-23 highway at 65-75 with the 6spd manual (3.45 gears), but that's better than the 16mpg it was reporting before the re-cal... the 2.5 lift and LoD bumper + Winch probably aren't helping with mpg either. :P
Wait so if i take my jl back to the dealership they can recalibrate it for free????

Just upgraded to rubi take offs.
No happy yet....
I also feel a slight vibration at hwy speeds smh 70-80mph. The tires looked to be balanced but im thinking maybe thats the cause of the vibration.

The mt(falken wildpeak mt) tires are a little loud but they were almost free considering i payed 1k for 30mile driven(brand new almost)5 rubi takoffs with tires.

33.3 inch Toyos

stock 3.45 gearing

Definitely feel the hit with the extra weight. But I would say a re-gear isn't absolutely necessary. I do tend to use the manual shift mode in my automatic that helps alleviate some of the shift points because the Auto tends to always want to go in the highest gear and bog out. Maybe when I get a little more coin I will upgrade to 4.56. But as for now I'm happy and it's doable

Might be more hit to the 3.6
But 35” pizza cutters on my 2.0L I honestly couldn’t tell much of a difference. 60lb tires probably helped here too.
Also around 20-21 mpg.

I’ve been running 17x9’s with a 4.75” backspace on 33’s 11.5 wide, no lift, without any issues at all. Tires are Nitto Ridge Grapplers. Would highly recommend.

I would however regear if going to 35’s and up. Just my personal opinion. I have M186/M220. 6Spd M/T

Note: my tires actually measure nearly 34”
How is the 6th gear on the highway with the 33”?

6th gear is perfect for 60mph
7th for when ur cruising hwy around 70+

8th for me is pretty much useless on 33s
Thanks!
Im especially curious to know on 6th gear for a manual transmission as I’m getting mixed information reading this thread.

I have 33's on 3.45 gears w/6MT. It's only ~5% different than the stock tires, so 6th gear is mostly still unused - only really usable at ~70+ on a pretty flat road. That said, if you want more RPMs you can drive in 5th (it's still an overdrive gear) or 4th etc. 1st gear I still find to be plenty low (it's quite a bit lower than 1st in the 8AT). If you do find yourself needing a lower 1st or reverse then you might consider a regear. Regearing for more highway RPMs on a MT rig seems silly, since you can just select a different gear with the transmission.

My 6th gear is good to go on the interstate. I can pass in many situations without dropping to 5th.

However, if I am in a tight situation I will drop to 5th to pass or an even tighter situation 4th depending on my speed.

Just boils down to situational awareness but 90% of the time I don’t need to drop gears at highway speeds 70+ to pass.

You will be just above 2k RPM’s on the interstate at around 70+ which makes it easier to pass without downshifting. Once you get below 2k you may want to drop for that extra power band.

Basically very similar to the stock setup, which I like.

Hope this helps answer your questions!

I like the stance of your set up. What tires are you using, and are you on a lift?
