Hey Everyone,

I just paid my first property tax/registration renewal on my '18 JL. I was shocked to find that the property tax value was $28k! MSRP on the jeep was $50k. On one hand I was thrilled that my tax bill was almost half what I expected; on the other ouch... This depreciation can't be right!?

Curious to hear if other NC JL owners have had a similar experience.

Same. MSRP was $40,000. property tax appraisal $24,300.

My guess is they use a standard sliding scale for all vehicles.

I believe 27 states have a vehicle property tax. Also, some municipalities also charge a property tax too.

It is an NC thing. We pay annual property taxes on our vehicles when we renew our tag. It is based on the appraised value.

it's NC's way of getting more then their share of $$
sales tax is relatively low on new cars at 3.5 +/- % but their is an annual road tax of about 1% based on KBB and average used values
it adds up
I have some high end muscle cars that are a bargain to register when first bought as NC doesn't care about a bill of sale or what you paid (i.e. '70 Hemi Cuda Conv. worth well over 6 figures is valued by NC at $1500)
on newer cars the annual road tax can really add up
I have a 2 year old AMG GT-S that is valued by NC at around $100k so annual road tax is about $1000!

SC pays a property tax on vehicles also. We pay based on purchase price. Wish it was half like NC.

Man, and here I was complaining about paying $225 for both my Jeeps (17JKU&19JL) that each have special personalized plates:giggle: Registration for a passenger vehicle (varies slightly by county depending on local taxes) $34.50:like: in Ohio.

And this is literally the only thing I miss about Cleveland.

Massachusetts does it like this, I am sure NC is similar:
Year you bought your vehicle Vehicle value (% of manufacturer's list price)
Year before designated year of manufacture 50%
Year of manufacture 90%
Second year 60%
Third year 40%
Fourth year 25%
Fifth year and onwards 10%

CT gets you for sure. 6.x% sales tax when you buy it. Then a DMV tax when you buy it (about $300). Then a local tax of about $1200-1400 a year. Insane. But my monthly property taxes on my home are about equal to my monthly mortgage payment now and the state is still broke and ready to declare bankruptcy. We get nothing for all these taxes. The roads are terrible. The parks are terrible (you have to bring your own trash bags because the state cannot afford it). Utilities are old and antiquated. I don't even have public sewer or water but live in a very populated city. Can't wait to move at some point.

The Jeep and the Honda were our first two new vehicles... so Imagine my reaction when I got the tax bill on them compared to the old Ram and Mustang....
