I thought that I would take a minute to document my Journey to add LED headlights, and I am still not there yet!
  1. I started out with the stock halogen lights
  2. First change was to add 7” Pro Comp LED projectors (pulled from my JKU beforehand it went), with Amazon adapters
  3. Back to stock lenses, with 8,000 lumen BeamTech bulbs

The adapters need a 1/2” spacer to pull the lights flush with the grill.

I like the look!

But, the cut off has a step that bugs me

Next stop, swap back to stock lenses with BeamTech bulbs.

Some pictures/comparisons that I took along the way.

The spread of light from the BeamTech bulbs has been bothering me, yes I know that LED in a halogen lens will not be ideal, but I think that I can make it better.

After thinking about this for a while, I decided to give something a try, I rotated one of the bulbs by 180 degrees, the results are below, taken straight after the picture above. Yes they look very different, the lighting, the angle, etc....

Note:
  • I haven’t been flashed with either setup
  • I also know that LED lenses is not optimal
I just wanted to share what I have done and tried.

I will get out this weekend and see how the rotated bulb works :) My thinking is that the stock lenses are designed to aim, and maybe the light will be aimed differently if the hi/low are in the same position in the housing (inside/outside).

Just ask @cosine he knows!
Of all the setups you've done the first pic of the ProComps looks best to me, seems like a pretty flat cut line (at least from this shot)

Thanks @blnewt, they do have a good cut off, but they is a step in each side that bothers me!

Unfortunately I don’t have anywhere flat to set up the cut off at night, the best that I can do is back halfway out my garage, and use the back wall.

How noticeable is that step when the beams are projected on a roadway instead of a wall? It seems like the step would be less apparent as the beams spread out at greater distances.

The step is in the inside shield, most OEM HID and LED Projector lights have them. The light cutoff steps down towards on coming traffic

@Jcarrig3 It's on the road that I notice it, I think that the issue is that I am looking at them far harder than I should, and seeking perfection!

@EgGreg That is very interesting to know, thanks for sharing :)
