Hello everyone!

This past Thursday, on 11-12-2020 I ordered my first ever, Jeep. As the title says, it is a 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.

The Rubicon will be primarily used for off roading purposes. Prior to me getting this Jeep, I was always a Toyota Tacoma guy and always had excellent experiences with them. This past time around I almost ordered what would have been my third Toyota Tacoma, with it being a new 2021 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 TRD Off Road Pro.

Another reason why I always bought Tacoma’s for off roading instead of and Wranglers before, was also because I needed to have a truck to use in construction, when I worked for my Uncle. I now have a full size truck and will be keeping it in addition to my Rubicon and because of that, I wasn’t really needing a truck for off roading purposes anymore.

Another thing that stopped me from buying another Tacoma again is the fact that with a Jeep Rubicon, the off road capabilities are so much better and the Jeep Wranglers in general are easier to lift and put bigger tires on them without having to do major modifications that for all intents and purposes are a permanent thing. And no matter what I would do to the Tacoma, a front differential locker would not possible at all. And so now, I will see how I like becoming a part of the Jeep family.

Since this thread will be my build thread as I get the Jeep and modify it over time, I wanted to start this first post with what I have so far. My Jeep’s order sheet/build sheet.
Thanks everyone!
J.

Welcome to the Jeep family Jason!

I would suggest spending a little time getting to know the capabilities of your new Rubicon (offroad, sway bar disco, 4wheel Hi/lo), as I think it may surprise you. Then, research is your friend as you look into mods. We have so many choices with this regard, try and do the bigger mods only once and with quality parts. Good luck with your choices.

Looking forward to seeing where you take your new Jeep.

Steven, thank you! And I 100% agree with you. Spend the money once or maybe I should say on fewer occasions by going with proven, quality parts. Even though I’m coming from the Tacoma world, I always believed in buying quality components that were proven, not the cheap garbage stuff.

When I get my Rubicon, I will keep the ride height and wheels stock for a little bit and get used to how a stock Rubicon unlimited drives. Especially off road. But learning the nuances of it will also be very fun as well!

I’m considering adding the leather seats to my build. Unfortunately, where I live is in a small, rural town in North, East Colorado. The Jeep dealership is in our town but they normally don’t keep in stock a lot of Jeep Wranglers.

Where I now live is more of an agricultural community and so as a result, there aren’t a lot of Wranglers out here when compared to other types of vehicles.

Because there aren’t a lot of Jeep Wranglers out here, I have no way of checking out the 3 different types of leather seat options. Or even the standard cloth seats either.

Out of all 4 seating options, which ones do you recommend and why?

Thanks!
J

Hello everyone, I’m going to have to eventually edit my first post. The Jeep ordered above is what I was really wanting to have built and come in. However, there is a specific reason why I ordered my JL and within some of those reasons it includes starting a website, YouTube off-road channel and bringing on sponsors. As a result of that, I needed a lighter colored JL so any sponsors/advertisers being placed on my JL, would be able to be seen a lot more easily. As a result, I I changed the JL’s paint color to white. I also deleted the headliner on the 3 piece hard top roof and deleted the matte black grill. Everything else has been left the same though.

Welcome and sure hope you are not disappointed coming from long time Toyota ownership.
I don’t think I will be. With my Tacoma’s, I always used them as my primary vehicles too. I will still be keeping my truck for every day use and the Jeep for primarily off road use only, but will also drive the Jeep maybe 1 or 2 days out of the week so the battery stays fresh. This will also allow me to have another vehicle to use if the Jeep is having any modifications done to it. I really am excited about finally getting one. I have always wanted a Jeep Wrangler, CJ or even an original Willy’s from the 1940’s but never really had the chance until now.

In 2007, when I got hired for the State of Colorado and was in the academy in Canon City, I saw the new JK’s that had just come out. I really liked them a lot too. After the academy ended, I ordered one from a dealership in Wyoming. I had a price agreed to in advance and was pretty excited for it to come in. About 2 or 3 months later, when the Jeep finally did arrive, the dealership tried raising the price on me. Fortunately, I never put any money down and everything was on a handshake deal. Needless to say, I told them to pound sand and ended up buying my Tacoma a week or so later.

With the new Jeep’s, there are so many models. It used to be just the Sport, Sahara and Rubicon. Now there are like 5 other models and way confusing. I have no idea what the difference is between all of the other ones? The most important thing to me was having front and rear lockers and the best off road capabilities even in factory, stock form so the Rubicon was a no brainer.

My JLUR build and upgrades has officially began! I ordered a bunch of things from several different companies and almost everything has come in but some stuff is still, unfortunately, on back order for at least another couple of months or so. But here is everything so far.

1. A crap ton of new tools and things that I can take in the Jeep for helping fix and/or do trail repairs for either myself and/or anyone else in need who has broken down.

2. 3 separate Hi Jack lifts. A 48” Extreme Jack, a 60” First Responder Jack, a 60” Patriot Edition Jack and at least 1 of every Hi Jack accessories sold by them. The people at Hi Jack were absolutely amazing to deal with and due to the size of my order and with what I am wanting to do with my Jeep, YouTube channel and website dedicated to off roading, Hi Lift was kind enough to discount the price of everything that I bought.

3. A Warn Zeon 12-S winch with OEM Winch mounting plate for the stock steel bumpers on my JLUR. The winch came in but the plate that is needed to mount the winch onto my front OEM steel bumper is still on back order for another few weeks.

4. Lots of Factor 55 winch accessories and rescue and/or recovery gear, including a new Factor 55 Ultrahook. Another big thank you goes out to Factor 55 for the discounts that they gave me as well, for all that I have planned to do with my JLUR.

5. A crap ton of off road lights from HC Hilites. I still have some Flex Era 4 lights and Gravity Pro 6 LED driving beam pattern lights on back order but what I did have come in is my 50” Gravity Pro 6 LED light bar and A pillar mounting hardware with mounting brackets for off road lights to be able to be mounted to the A pillars as well. I also got 4, Gravity Pro 6 LED spot beam pattern off road lights. Last was a pair of Gravity G4 LED fog lights. Another huge thank you to the people at KC Hilites. They too gave my a very nice discount for everything that I ordered and have been absolutely amazing to work with. With the off road lights, I had some ideas of what I wanted and why but needed to make sure that I had the very best things made for my Jeep. With the off road lights it ended up coming down to 3 or 4 different companies. 1 of the companies was actually somewhat rude whenever I would speak to them. They acted as if it didn’t matter if I bought from them or not and they seemed annoyed that I was asking questions about what they make so I could educate myself a lot better. But then whenever I spoke with anyone at KC Hilites, it was a totally different experience. Everyone was very pleasant to deal with. Everyone was very knowledgeable about anything that they sold and it was not just their quality of off road lights and accessories that won me over but their outstanding customer service as well, every single time I spoke with someone!

6. An aftermarket winch guard/light bar/front bumper hoop. I forget who makes it but the quality seems pretty good and everything appears like it should line right up.

7. Folding down front license plate bracket that allows me to keep my front license plate legally attached to my Jeep but also allows the winch and everything to be stored behind it.

I will try and get pics of everything really soon, before everything starts getting installed, while it’s getting installed and then after everything gets installed.

Yea... why three hi lifts and all the random junk? Could have bought a nice lift and wheels and tires for what you've spent so far.

Why three hilifts?
A few reasons. First, I always want to have at least 1 thing of redundancy or a back up built in. Yes, if one breaks on the trail Hi Lift may warranty the broken part but that does me no good for the time being.

Next, with Covid and so many things being on back order, even if I need something repaired, replaced or warrantied, who knows how long I may have to wait in the future?

Last, there have been times when I have been out off roading that I have seen other vehicles get stuck and need 2 jacks to get them unstuck. For example, a trail was rutted and washed out and a friend had the front wheels each go into a washed out rut due to the dirt giving way. The only way to get the vehicle unstuck was to lift the front end on each side. We then had to slide several planks of 2x4’s several pieces thick and long across the ruts so his front tires could rest on them after they were lifted out of the ruts. He was then able to back out, driving on the planks of wood but if only had 1 jack, there is no way that we would have been able to get his truck out without doing some damage to it. Also, where I live now is a very rural part of the Country where the weather can turn bad quick. People have been stranded in their vehicles for hours or even overnight at times because of how far out we live and not enough tow trucks to pull all the vehicles out. It’s not uncommon to see farmers, ranchers or whoever that has the proper equipment and willingness to due so, go out, drive around in a tractor or full size 4WD and either rescue people until a tow truck can get to the vehicles or they can get pulled out of a ditch by a tractor or other rescue equipment. This last year I came across 4 people that were all in a ditch right next to each other. If I had my Hi Lift Jacks back then I could have gotten them all out much faster. And when it’s blowing heaving snow, freezing cold in the single digits or sometimes even colder, if I can use 3 jacks to get 3 people out at once, instead of only 1 person unstuck at a time, that is much more preferable.

If you're going to carry around 3 hi lifts, might I suggest getting some Peterbuilt springs? Seriously, those things are heavy. You'd be far better served, IMO, with something like a winch or even a come-along paired with a single high lift. Or a shovel.

You can always make an argument for redundancy, but you don't have infinite space or weight capacity. And the ultimate in recovery gear is wheeling with someone else. 2 Jeeps will always be better than one.

Redundancy is cool and I'm a big fan but hilifts are about the least likely thing to break. Get one 60", save the extra cash on the two others and get yourself a winch.... Or not! :fist bump:

Definitely post up when you're using multiples to get unstuck though!
