I finally moved into my first house with a garage and now looking to start my tool set. What do you all recommend getting to be able to just about do everything on our JLs? We can't wait to start working on our Black JLUR.

First, get yourself a nice big toolbox, on wheels. Costco sells a nice one.

HF's are reasonably priced and seem to get good reviews.

The rest of the list is very long. A good socket set and ratchets. I bought the Craftsman 300 piece socket set.

That will have most of what you'll ever need. Then you'll need lotso-wrenches. Screw drivers etc.

If you want impact tools I like the Milwaukee stuff in both the M18 and M12 batteries, but I also have the Dewalt ecosystem. Home Depot sells a nice impact socket set.

You'll need a couple (at least) torque wrenches, too.

Again, this is far from an exhaustive list. I buy simple stuff that the Chinese can't mess up too bad at HF, such as socket extensions and adapters. You can save a lot of money that way.

You'll have to make a lot of trips to the tool store to do some man-shopping. (oh darn!)

The main thing really is toolbox like Steven says. Then just buy things as you need them. That’s been my practice, of course I started many years ago, so now I have a almost everything you can think of. Including a hydraulic press I needed to replace a bearing in an old car lol. Whenever I have a job to do, I check at the tools needed and make sure I have them or go get them.
For starters, yes a set of sockets, wrenches and screwdrivers. And hammer. Don’t forget the hammer. Sometimes you just need to beat the crap out of something or anything.:giggle:

1/4 Hex Driver: https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Power-Tools/Fastening/Impact-Drivers/2553-20

A comprehensive set of impact and standard sockets, best bet is to have both SAE and Metric. It is always a good idea for to purchase lifetime warranty items. Craftsman, Husky, Etc. *make sure you have a 24mm socket for oil filter housing!*

Good quality items...
Torque wrench - 1/2” (50 to 250 ft lbs range) and 3/8” (10 to 100 ft lbs range)
Jack Stands
Jack
Interior Trim tools
Punches
Picks

Basic hand tools...
Pliers: of all kinds!
Screwdrivers
Wrenches: Ratcheting wrenches, Adjustable wrenches, etc.

I am sure there is something missing from this list, but should get the brain gears turning!

Steveo is right about the toolbox but don't touch that one from Costco. Many of the toolboxes from them do not have a boxed frame or just use angle iron. However his mention of Harbor Freight is spot on. The 44" General uses C-channel steel for its base and it's rock solid for the money. It is also expandable with add on components. It's weakest point is the caster wheels. However most people don't move them around in their home garage and you could always buy some higher quality casters. The 56" cabinet is also fantastic but it's overkill for most people. Go do a search on these on the tool forums of GarageJournal.com and you'll see for yourself that most people think highly of this VERY affordable tool cabinet.

Point-counter-Point... Jane, you ignorant slut. :)

I have the Kirkland toolbox and love it. I have several of the drawers loaded with a lot of weight (that 300 piece socket set is not light) and have had no problems with it. I especially like the latches on the drawers.

For the price, I think it's a good deal. It's much better than anything that the home stores sell.

For the occasional home mechanic I think it's a good buy. It can be had for $400 when it's on sale iirc.

But yeah, shop around, decide what you need. HF is definitely worth a look.

I will second that on the harbor freight tool box. Hella better than my craftsman one and much cheaper.
