MPG and Range on the Ecodiesel

Only a week of ownership and around town driving - 26.5mpg (stock). 35’s going-on next week; anticipate a mileage hit and could care less. The diesel is a torque beast; surprised my mileage is high so early-on. I’ve laid into it, repeatedly. Here’s hoping, long-term, the diesel loves me back.

Are you still on the stock tires, or running 35s?

I definitely noticed the ammonia smell during a regen while on the highway. Not pleasant at all.

DEF is always injected into the exhaust, not just during a regen. The use of DEF does go up ever so slightly during a regen since urea use is roughly 3% of fuel use. So, burn more fuel during a regen, burn more DEF.

2 things to improve mpg without spending a single cent:

1. maintain 3+ car lengths from the car in front of you. braking = fuel wasted... coasting to reduce speed means you are saving fuel each time you let off the pedal to coast. if you are one car length behind, you slow down with brakes, you slow down faster but wasted fuel getting to your current speed. by being farther back you will see brake lights ahead and let off the accelerator, giving you time to react. fuel saved about 1 second of accelerator time per coast.

2. lower weight as much as possible. remove rear most seat and put into storage if you don't use it. 75 lbs right there. vehicle weight is one of the biggest factors affecting MPG

I know the smell occurred during a regen because my instantaneous fuel economy dropped from 30+ mph to something like 18 mpg while on level and smooth (love our AZ highways) pavement.

I’m only now approaching 8k miles on the odometer after 9 months of ownership, and I’ve added more than 7 gallons of DEF myself, and it was full when I took delivery.

I thought that was the case but wanted to check. I have a feeling im going 37s on my next order instead of the 35s I ran on my last 2. Really looking hard at the new Baja Boss ATs, but they are kind of heavy. the new (soon to be released) Raptor spec 37" KO2s may end up being the perfect light weight 37s.

I currently have 18k on the jeep. When I was running stock 33 inch K02 I was getting between 26 and 28 mpg. Since I am now running 315 Cooper STT tires my mileage dropped to 24 to 26 mpg. I have not seen any reason to regear. Overall I am very happy with the diesel engine.

thats impressive for the STT Pros. they are awesome tires, but really kill the mpg.

I agree with you. I was expecting a huge drop in mileage but to my delight I only lost a couple miles per gallon. The diesel doesn't even notice the bigger tires.

low/mid 20s around-town, and 26+ on road trips with a little 4-Lo time in the hills thrown in.
that's on stock tires, but with a Mopar Diesel lift that's settled in around 3.8F/3.2R" with the winch on it.

I haven't taken delivery of my 2021 JLUS diesel yet but I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs. I wanted the EcoDiesel because I had one in a 2016 Ram 1500 and with a GDE tune I was consistently getting 33-34mpg on the highway.
