OP - Thanks for posting; This thread has answered a lot of questions. I have a TJ, and getting a JLU in the Denver Metro. Here, bike thieves are rampant, so I wanted to see how a 27.5 fits inside while still able to do "kid drop off".

For 3 or 4 bikes, I've heard good things about the north shore rack. http://www.northshoreracks.com/NSR 4-bike.htm
I currently have a Kuat Transfer for 2 bikes, but considering that one for the bike parks.

Here is my rockymounts monorail solo that I use on my TJ or JL. Dont have any pics with it on the JL yet, just on the TJ. Great rack for the price! I ride a Pivot Switchblade and a Pivot LES. Here is my Switchblade (thinking of selling it and getting the new Trail 429 that just came out last week).

I might ditch my Switchblade for the new 429 also.... I used to have an TJU (LJ)... sorry I got rid of that though...

Kuat NV 2.0 works good too, and with a 6" extension it clears a 37" spare tire.

Looks sweet! But can you swing open the tailgate?

No, but it has a tilt option and allows the tailgate to open about 8", probably more with a smaller spare tire.
I just lay the seat down and access my bike stuff through side rear the door, no problem.

I have a Thule rack mounted on a 7" hitch extension. Works great. The Thule rack pivots down, which gives enough clearance to open the back without a bike on it. With a bike, I can open the gate about a foot, which is enough to grab stuff.

Just got my first full sus mountain bike and the Kuat rack doesn’t fit the wheelbase...bleh. Does it ever get annoying to have to swing the rack out of the way for groceries and stuff? We usually leave the rack on all year round and one concern going from SUV to Jeep is constantly moving the rack up and down. With the current SUV the rear hatch opens without flipping the rack down. I know first world problems and the SUV isn’t a convertible...

Has anyone tried the to save the $100+ by just ratchet strapping the bike to the spare tire?
