I have my Smittybilt X20 12K winch installed and am in the process of permanently wiring it. One of the things I am doing is adding a 500 amp relay (to cut the power when not in use) and I want to add a fuse in the main wiring as a safety. I have a very nice 500 amp ANL fuse block (https://www.amazon.com/Thor-THANLFB-500-ANL-Fuse-Block/dp/B01M2DF03H), but this thing is MASSIVE and will be difficult to install under the hood without some seriously creative wiring.

What are the thoughts as to the minimum fuse size needed? Would a 300 amp fuse suffice? If so, this model would fit so much easier:

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Current draw is dependent on load. The manual calls out 400 amps at 12K pounds.

looking at the manual looks like it is suppose to pull 330 amps at 12k so you want to size it you want 400 amp min

https://www.smittybilt.com/docs/installation/98512.pdf

most people do not run a fuse on their winch and all winch manufactures don't even recommend it
It is for an "oh crap" moment if the main power lead were to become chafed and short. I would rather not have a fire that takes out my Jeep. With that said, I elected not to install a fuse or a solenoid (just too large). I am installing a manual switch and as I always intend to use at least one snatch block, I should never see full load on the winch anyway.
