My wife's Toyota uses a plastic/composite (whatever non-metal filter holder) and they are fine. As long as you don't think tight is good and tighter is better lol. They have rubber gaskets to seal. You don't make as tight as you can to seal. She has over 60K leak free miles on it.

I don't think the cap will just break, its the cooler that will crap out.

Torque on the cap is like 25 ft lbs if I remember right.

Buy a torque wrench. Your going to need one when you replace the cooler.

It isn’t too big of a job, just pull the intake, pop the cooler off and install the new. Make sure the surface is nice and clean before putting on the new one. Parts are pricy but labor to have someone else do it is way more.

I don't know if its a big job but a nuisance one. I had just bought a filter and oil for it a couple weeks ago but haven't had the time to change it. 7 years and about 80k on the clock and I've done every oil change on it. Sounds like a very common problem and it has been redesigned a few times. And yes, labor charges are all over the place and a bit pricey.

I just hate plastic, I know it’s faster, easier and cheaper to make a part from plastic than steel or aluminum but I don’t think it holds up as well.

I think they had more issues on the older pentastar, the new PUG units have a redesigned cooler and assuming one doesnt over tighten the cap, should be fine.

plastics are a huge problem on euro trash oems since they are mandated to incorporate recyled material into the plastics on manifolds, hose connectors etc by their governments, hence they dont age well and cost a fortune to replace. not sure if the us made FCA products are forced to use the inferior recyled materials in their plastics and composites.

More or less. FCA should have taken a lesson from Mercedes when they owned Chrysler on oil cooler design and made the entire unit from aluminum with a plastic cap. It would have cooled better as well since there would be a larger area for a heat sink.

I changed my own oil on my ‘13 JKU and used a torque wrench to tighten it. Never had an issue. Did this for 8 years. Just make sure you change out the rubber ring on the cap and you will be fine.

the caps are replaceable but they only break from people either overtightening or using the wrong size socket.

I have been in the auto repair business for 40 years..... This past week we've replaced 3 housing assemblies due to over torqued filter caps.
2 Dodge Caravans/ 1 Grand Cherokee... Both happened within days of recent oil changes.
Glad it wasn't our shop that changed the oil.
It's critical that you DO NOT over torque the filter caps.
We replace about one a week, typically the complaint is a “burning smell” and the engine valley is completely filled with oil. Between the oil pressure sender and the O-rings on the plastic housing to the block, they leak like crazy. I’ve only ever seen one that was damaged physically.

Well, i just ordered a smaller Torque Wrench, to safely tighten these Oil Filter Caps. The Snap-On T-Wrench I have is too big for this job, and couldn't be dialed down enough.

I bought a 1/4" inch-pound torque wrench just for this. :like:
