I’m installing a dash cam, and for the time being I want to use the media port on the center stack. Later on I’ll probably hard wire it to an ignition switched source, but to get it going now I’m using the USB 2.0 (not C) port. I have the option to use the cigarette lighter, which is switched using ignition logic (no power supplied when not in run/ Acc), but I’d rather use the media port behind the square door to keep the plug out of the way of my knee.

Does anyone know what its power schedule and logic is? I plugged in the camera, and it remained on for roughly 3 minutes after turning the ignition off, then turned back on after 30 seconds. When exiting the vehicle, locking, and checking on it 10 minutes later it was off, but turned back on again once the door was opened. Also, is the CanBUS smart enough to shut down the ports when battery voltage drops below a certain level like it does with interior lights (if switch is left commanded on)?

Points of concern are:

I want the camera to be hands free. Turns on when preparing to drive, turns off when not in vehicle with no action by me.

I don’t want it receiving power constantly. It’s a Garmin Mini 2, and for some reason it gets and stays hot….which means it’s using significant power. Not good if left on for days at a time on the battery. (Garmin says it getting hot is “normal” operation)

If it does stay on, as in the port never gets turned off by the vehicles logic, will the JL ‘protect’ itself by isolating that usb port as it does with lighting when the battery gets below a preset voltage?

It seems the center console “USB 2” port follows the same logic, as I use that for CarPlay, and have seen similar behavior. I’ve also tried to charge my phone with it overnight with it taking power after plugging it in (vehicle never put in run) only to find it not supplying power in the morning with a dead phone.

After ignition is switched off, ALL USB ports stay powered up for 60 mins. At this time there is no way to set-up differently.

Here's a useful toy to plug into the console's ignition energized 12V without it getting in the way of your knees. It's very easy to install.

BTW: If you want a "battery," as opposed to an "ignition/accessory" electrical source for your phone charging etc., the cargo plug, if equipped, in the cargo area is by default from the factory a plug that is always energized. You can make it an "ignition/accessory" plug by moving a fuse in the Power Distribution Center.

Pin 16 (0f 16) of the ODB 2 port is also always energized:

I was experimenting and had some odd behavior. I was working in the garage so I had the opportunity to babysit it.

I did a few power cycles (unlock, door open/ close, run, off, door open/ close, lock). The first couple times the camera powered down after a few minutes, and powered back up after unlocking and opening the door. The last couple times it remained on for at least 30 minutes and the camera dropped into ‘parking mode’ (stays on, but records when impact is sensed). I’m not sure why it’s inconsistent, and since it seems inconsistent I don’t trust it. So I’ll just run it off of the ignition switched cigarette lighter for now until I feel like running an ignition switched hardwire. For being a small camera it takes up an absurd amount of power (it gets and stays very hot).

As for your knee hitting the cigarette lighter plug, I had this issue, and I found a flush mount adapter on amazon and then a 90 degree USB cord and I no longer have an issue with my knee hitting the thing. It's clean and out of the way.

This is what I’m doing short term. The camera came with a flush mount, and I ordered a 90° adapter on Amazon.
What will annoy me now is the outlet door flopping around.

My outlet door does not flap around.

On another note, if you have the aux switches, there is a bundle of cables under the glove box. This contains the 4 wires for the aux switches, but it also contains a power wire connected to ignition and a power wire that is always on.

You could tap into this as well

I have a Sport S, so no aux switches. I do have a stand alone power distribution center I installed though. Running another cable isn’t a big deal. I’m a weirdo and enjoy wiring.

That's pretty cool! What brand is that?

I just ran a big bundle of wires to the back of my Jeep, to connect an auxiliary battery with redarc dc to dc charger, fridge, arb compressor, all using the American adventure Labs cubby Mount and arb relocation kit. I ran 3ga power, and two 10ga for auxiliary future use and an ignition cable to tell the redarc it can charge.

I still need to connect everything together but at least the wires are run. I hate ripping off interior panels!

This kit is from from voswitch. The PDC is on a board, individual relays and fuses, with a 100a master fuse on the feed line. The control cable is an old style serial bus computer cable, so there’s only one small cable to route into the cabin. It works good, but does not like VHF RF. I have a 25w UHF/VHF antenna on the fender next to it, and when transmitting on VHF the board freaks out and the relays chatter, strobing my Rigid lights even when the PDC is put into standby. I put a kill switch on the feed line with a 100a relay with the switch next to the radio so I can depower it to transmit. Other than that minor quirk it’s been great for years. Watertight with the cover on it. The switch panel mounts on top of the dash, and they include every switch plate you can think of. They’re all back lit on a dimmer and turn orange when on.

My dash camera, like many, is energized by 3 wires: a common ground, a wire designed to connect to an electrical source that is only energized when the vehicle is cranked, and an optional wire that connects to a "battery" energy source that is always on.

It knows to go into parking mode if the ignition wire carries no current but the battery wire does. Perhaps yours has some ability to detect lack of movement to put it into parking mode (??)

It does. It has a motion sensor for auto save during an accident. This one in particular uses a USB. A kit is sold to do what yours does though. Direct 12v connection to the battery, and a signal line to connect to a switched source.
