trying to finish up installing and when i open the tail gate i can only open about 3/4 of the way because the factory tailgate stop (the metal piece that goes from the tailgate to inside of the brake light cavity) will not allow it to open any farther. am i supposed to remove this piece or have i done something incorrect?

I had the same issue.
I just took the bolts lose that hold the tailgate stop bracket to the body and let it self adjust a bit. After some tweaking it worked just fine.
It did make some rough noises at first so I added to a little grease.
After that it's been just fine and still holds well, even on a slope.
Hope that helps!

got mine fully installed now...the instructions were excellent! The one small question i had i called Maximus 3 and got an immediate answer. The carrier itself is awesome, super heavy duty and very adjustable. Haven't had it off road yet, but on road no rattles or noises. Very happy so far.

Did some badge of honor trails in Arkansas this weekend and the TC did great.
I did however find an issue with the hilift mount.
The gate can swing open far enough to allow the hilift to contact the brake light which finally broke after a weekend of wheeling.
Is there a plan to make a stop?
I am going to bend some steel the can act as a stop when installed over the hinge pin but it would be cool if maximus 3 made one for the hilift kit.

Sorry to see this. We ship the High Lift mount with a stopper-bolt which limits the travel and prevents this exact scenario.
It's a rubber-headed bolt that goes on the tailgate hinge.
The stopper-bolt apparently either wasn't included or not installed.

I did get those bolts with the kit, but there were no instructions. I put it on in a hurry and didn't think much of it until now.
Can you email the installation instructions?
Thanks guys! I'm glad you already had a fix for it, unfortunately I didn't install it!!

Looks great. The off-center reminds me of the JK AEV carrier. I dig the look and it allows for tailgate door handle clearance.

Probably a dumb question but...for people that have installed their tire carriers, did you reuse the factory hardware to mount the hinge to tailgate or were there bolts provided? The instructions call for 4 stainless steel truss bolts and washers but thats not in my kit?

I personally don't mind my spare not being centered. Here is a perfectly centered spare tire.
