Oh, I got that, I didn't think you meant anything negative at all. But, sleep deprivation from this Flu/bronchitis/crud and the associated meds definitely have me more "Irritable" than normal. Thanks again!

I’ll give you a reason to think about not getting them. I really wanted them after having power windows in my last jk. I got a 2 door Willy’s with manual windows and the window crank hits me right in the knee when driving. It’s awful and I’m looking for a remedy.

What part of the window crank hits your knee? If it's the knob on the end, I wonder if you can remove the crank handle and reposition it so when the window is all the way up the crank handle is in a different position that avoids your knee. Most crank handles are splined and held on with a screw or clip allowing you to reposition the handle.

There is no way to avoid hitting it for me. My knee used to rest directly on the switches for the power windows but they were flush. Now there is that crank mechanism that my knee rests on. I just installed a dead people to hopefully help but i don't find it as comfortable as where a usually put my left leg.

I decided not to wait for a JL, and I bought a JK unlimited (for a variety of reasons) with half doors, but one of the main reasons I went JK was because I really wanted half doors, and since the JL wasn't going to have practical ones, had to go JK. I do not regret my decision at all, and knew what I was getting into in most respects with the noise, vinyl zipper windows, etc because I actually had the full soft doors on my 2 door years ago.

However, I would be lying if I didn't say it is definitely more work having the manual windows / locks, and there are times that I am like ugh this is a pain in the ass. I did get spoiled with the power windows, and it is definitely more challenging because I have 3 young kids still in car seats who now drive me nuts with "daddy, I want my window down", "daddy, I want my window up" and can't do it without pulling the car to the side of the road. also, as someone else pointed out earlier, if you are the type who always wants to lock your doors, if you are going to be going in and out of the back seat all the time, it is a real headache trying to unlock the back doors.

I admittedly have not been following the JL Forums as much since buying my JK in November, so if my info is bad, I apologize, but last I had seen, the half doors on the JL are going to be true half doors, with no top half of the door available at all. Is that no longer the case? If that is not the case anymore, then my comment about the doors not being practical was incorrect.

I currently have manual windows in my 2012 Sport, I dont mind at all cranking a window.

That said though the one downside for crank windows in a Jeep is that Jeeps are already somewhat narrow. Both of the TJs I have owned had manual windows and this was not an issue, but in the JK, I find that the window crank handle on the door is always in the way. When the window is up the end of the handle is at about the 2 oclock position and jams my knee (I am 6'1" for reference)....when the window is down it is fine and sits at about the 7 oclock position which is under and behind my leg. Given in the winter I do not drive around with my windows down its annoying. When I get in the Jeep I sometimes crack my knee on the handle also which should not be an issue since JLs now have door stops. I love manual windows, they work in all seasons and there is no electrical or motor to worry about going out down the line....but my left knee hates them.

I went with a Rubicon this go around so this is not an issue for me with the JL, however if I was going to go with a Sport and thinking about saving the money to not do power accessories I would wait and sit in one first to see if my knee will still love me or not before i pull the trigger.

I don't know that we have solid information, actually. The half doors at the LA Auto Show were proofs of concept, not due out until 2019.

I'm sure that if Jeep doesn't supply uppers, someone else will.

My presumption is that within the center of the manual window crank lies a series of gear teeth that interface with similar teeth inside the door, that when turned in one direction or the other, respectively pull and push on mechanisms within the door to raise and lower the window.

Could the window crank then be temporarily detached, and repositioned pretty much anywhere with respect to its 360 degree rotation such that its orientation with respect to a clock dial, in both completely open and completely shut window states was more ergonomically student to those bumping their knee on it--or is the mechanism not one that allows reorientation of the window crank?

True that someone else will make them, but I had the option to buy fully functional half doors with the vehicle by getting a JK as opposed to potentially having to buy doors aftermarket with a JL, and the JL to me is not that much better that I HAD to have a JL, so I went with the tried and true JK, which I have no problem with, my 2010 never gave me any troubles really. Plus, I don't really have the space or desire to find a place to store 4 full jeep doors at this point in my life. I finally got rid of the hardtop I stored for 3 years because I never used it, didn't want to have 4 extra doors taking its place. so even if the aftermarket did offer them, it had a lot of downsides, so just pulled the trigger on the JK. Yes. Plenty of JK owners have repositioned the crank hand to avoid their knee.

Here is something related to doors I found interesting. I used to have a 1992 Geo Storm with manual locks. One day I removed the door interior covering to fix something, and was surprised to find the doors had electric lock actuators installed. Had I wanted to, I could have run some wires and a couple of switches to have electric door locks. I assumed there was some economy/production line reason Geo/Chevy thought it more cost effective to install the electric lock actuators in all vehicles, even those with manual locks. Not sure if Jeep does similar thing in their doors - I assume not.

In terms of electric windows, the main thing I appreciate about them is not having to reach across or to the back of the vehicle, for ventilation adjustment or to knock some fog/snow off a window while driving. But otherwise I am a bit of a Luddite who prefers manual crank windows. Since I will likely go base model Sport, I will have only crank windows as an option, unless later deciding to install some J.C. Whitney type aftermarket kit.
