Sorry if this has been asked, searched to no avail. Just curious if you guys have had the same experience.

I usually try to not run low on fuel, exception for road trips when I am trying to maximize travel time. Well this last fill up, I had 10 miles to empty according to the cluster, and for reference had been getting 24mpg(city). After filling up I only needed 14.3 gallons to fill completely.

So either I had quite a bit more than 10 miles of remaining distance on the tank, or the tank does not hold 18.3 gallons.

Anyone else notice this?

I almost never let my tanks get close to empty out of habit. At some point I'll have to let ours go down low so I can know what to expect in an emergency. 10 miles to empty vs 4 gallons to fill is definitely out of whack.

Curious to see the replies you get here.

They leave a pretty solid reserve for the people who run their miles-to-empty down to 0. There’s quite a bit left after that point

And thats kind of where I am. I try to never let it happen, but from time to time it happens. And being "don't worry, i know my car" confident is always a nice thing 😆

It's in the Owner Manual:

Low Fuel Warning Light
When the fuel level reaches approximately 2.0 gal (7.5 L), this light will turn on and a chime will
sound. The light will remain on until fuel is added.

Yeah, I know, just as with every vehicle. Still doesn't jive with the numbers I have seen, which is why I brought it up here.

I filled up 15.33 gal yesterday and the light was on for a few miles. I normally don't run it until the light comes on but the other time I did was 15.56 gal. So I think there's probably a little more than 2 gal when the light comes on.

The fuel tank sizes in the JLs are different depending on whether the vehicle is 2 door or 4 door and gas or diesel. The amount of fuel required when the light comes on will vary accordingly.

Fuel (Approximate)
Two Door Models - 17.5 Gallons/66 Liters
Four Door Models - 21.5 Gallons/81 Liters
3.0L Diesel Engine - 18.3 Gallons/69 Liters
Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank - 5.1 Gallons/19.3 Liters

I've seen about 2 gallons when the light comes on. Can't remember what the "Miles to Empty" was. Just my 2 cents.

My wife runs her car past the warning light, past miles to empty and so on, SO OFTEN, I hate to get in with her because I always have to fill it up...lol

My fuel light kicked on the other day. I drove it until it said low. After the distance to empty was gone. I filled up to the TOP running out the fill neck full. I put in just over 20 gallons

Wow thats alot, but the filler neck probably does hold a bit.
This was our fill up yesterday. Did the TFL method of fill till click, wait a few seconds, then fill to click again. So I still had at least 2 gallons, if not more considering the filler neck, but it said 12 miles to empty. Despite the OBC reading 24 mpg.

This is a sure indication that the fuel station pump needs to be recalibrated by the state as it is not accurately measuring the volume of fuel being dispensed.

This happens all too frequently. About 15 years ago, I once put in more than 60 gallons (as measured by a gas pump) into an RV that only had a 50 gallon tank. I used a gasoline branded credit card to make the purchase and sent a letter to the card company with a copy of the receipt and explained the problem. I received a credit to my bill in the next billing period for the difference, and an apology.

Typically, however, passenger vehicles with smaller fuel tanks, it's much harder to determine whether you've been overcharged due to a mis-calibrated fuel pump.

I thought the same thing. The calibration shows current and valid. I will try this with an empty dragup tank or something larger at that station and see what I come up with.

I have had vehicles where the Range Estimate was so good that zero actually meant zero, meaning once the range would become 0, about a mile later it would show dashes instead of the zero and about another mile or so and the engine would cut off.
Having said that, it appears that the JL gives a bit more wiggle room. For example, a few days ago the low fuel indicator came on, which was at ~35 miles on the range indicator, and I kept driving until I reached a gas station. I arrived with my range estimate showing 10 miles and the graphic indicator showing completely empty.

After filling up completely, I filled 19.3 gallons.

My JL has a 21.5 gallon tank.

With the gauge on completely empty and the range estimate at 10miles, I still had 2.2 gallons in the tank.
