Just learning about lockers, but having a hard time finding good info about them. What all is involved in adding them? What's a range of cost? Brands to look at, and ones to stay away from? Does it automatically engage when I go to 4wd, or is it an additional step?

Best advice I can give you is search “locking differentials” on YouTube and take the evening to watch through some videos. There is a ton info on there - way more than could be covered in a forum post.

brief answers to your questions...

What all is involved in adding them? replacing the differential carrier

What's a range of cost? varies widely depending on which locker, if you do front and rear and labor. VERY rough estimate $500-$2000/diff depending on labor and which locker; it can go higher if you swap gears at the same time. I used to own a fabrication/manufacturing company that specialized in Land Rovers. We also had a garage and charged $200-300/diff to replace a stock carrier with a locker depending on which type. That did not include installation into the vehicle, though. Unlike Jeep’s, Rovers are like toyotas in that they have a removable 3rd member. Google is your friend if you need more info on 3rd members.

Brands to look at, and ones to stay away from? They are several brands out there. I’m a huge fan of ARB. They are selectable (similar to the mopar lockers on the rubicon, which I’m also a big fan of .. though, they work a bit differently) and strong, but expensive. Friends of mine like Detroit, they are also strong, but they are always locked - Detroits are less expensive and less complicated, though. It just depends on what you want/how you’re using your rig. For me, I want to be able to select when I want it locked depending on the situation I’m in ... that’s a whole other discussion, too much for a forum post. There are also lots of cheaper options.

Does it automatically engage when I go to 4wd, or is it an additional step? No. it could be an additional step, just depends on what you have installed.

good luck-
