A thought came across about what other people have said about their experiences at dealers during oil changes. Some have reported that the dealers have put or attempted to put unspecified/wrong oil into their vehicles. I wonder and I say wonder, because I don’t have any data to back it up, if that was maybe part of the problem with some of the engine problems that happened on the previous generation Jeeps with the Diesel engines? From my experiences over the last 50 years, I’ve noticed that my mechanic buddies, that are wonderful people, are not quick to adopt new products and ideas as far as oil goes. One guy, that’s damn close to being the most reliable and honest person I know, just started using synthetic oil in his own rig because it specifically said only synthetic.
So is it one of those things that regular oil or a less than specified oil is good enough for me and should be good enough for your Jeep or the dealers being cheap or not caring? Who knows, but I’m going to watch the dealer closely.
I always have a warm spot in my heart for mechanics as they are some of the most under appreciated service people. Many are underpaid, work in miserable conditions and are constantly bitched at and pushed, I often tip mechanics and the surprise that they show says it doesn’t happen very often. So the previous paragraphs weren’t intended to knock mechanics, I’m just wondering about whether the specified oil is getting into the hellaciously expensive Jeep that we have.
