A thought came across about what other people have said about their experiences at dealers during oil changes. Some have reported that the dealers have put or attempted to put unspecified/wrong oil into their vehicles. I wonder and I say wonder, because I don’t have any data to back it up, if that was maybe part of the problem with some of the engine problems that happened on the previous generation Jeeps with the Diesel engines? From my experiences over the last 50 years, I’ve noticed that my mechanic buddies, that are wonderful people, are not quick to adopt new products and ideas as far as oil goes. One guy, that’s damn close to being the most reliable and honest person I know, just started using synthetic oil in his own rig because it specifically said only synthetic.
So is it one of those things that regular oil or a less than specified oil is good enough for me and should be good enough for your Jeep or the dealers being cheap or not caring? Who knows, but I’m going to watch the dealer closely.
I always have a warm spot in my heart for mechanics as they are some of the most under appreciated service people. Many are underpaid, work in miserable conditions and are constantly bitched at and pushed, I often tip mechanics and the surprise that they show says it doesn’t happen very often. So the previous paragraphs weren’t intended to knock mechanics, I’m just wondering about whether the specified oil is getting into the hellaciously expensive Jeep that we have.

This oil stuff is a money maker thats all it is. I had a 16 Challenger SRT that was supposed to run pennzoil crap used Mobil 1 first oil change and forward never 1 issue. Remember when chevy said the vette could only run mobile 1 years ago. Ram sire was the same way oh use redline or amsoil with this additive no hemi tick. Guess what i used valvoline in all my 5.7 hemis never a issue. If people are so wrapped up in oil i have some ocean front property ill sell you in Oklahoma.

In my opinion, I think it is wise to follow the recommendations for the EcoD to cover our rears should any warranty claims with the exhaust emissions arise. After warranty period and delete (Offroad racing in Mexico of course) run what you want to.

I can be everyone's guinea pig. At 15k miles, I switched to Rotella T6 5w-40...and now the little diesel is at 20k. After exhaustive research and reading on the subject I made the decision.

The issue is all about ash content of the oil, and ash is an enemy to the DPF. The unicorn blood recommended is very low ash...and VERY expensive. The ash content of Rotella T6 is also very low ash but is VERY affordable. The difference in ash content is VERY small...

Ponder this...ash content aids in lubrication...more ash better lubrication (in theory). Lower ash (in theory) means increased wear. So what they are chasing with the oil recommendation is sacrificing the engine (more wear) to prolong the life of the of the DPF (better emission over the life of the engine).

Ash being metallic to semi-metallic will not burn out of the DPF. As an engine wears, there is more blow-by and non-combustible ash accumulates in the DPF.

What does all this mean? From what I can find from my research, the low ash numbers from using unicorn blood vs Rotella T6 low ash would not have any impact on the DPF for somewhere between 150,000 miles and 250,000 miles. This is from data and testing taken on large over the road diesel engines.

I made the decision, low ash Rotella T6 and reduced engine wear rather than a super healthy DPF at 150,000 to 250,000 miles and an old oil hog.

@Plongson -- you bring up a very valid point. Fiat has spent a ton of money in research and developing as low as an emission spouting engine as they can and potentially for argument's sake has decided to sacrifice engine longevity in order to meet mandated quotas in smog production. I kind of agree with what everybody is saying these last four comments. I think everybody is right to a certain degree. The mechanics that I know typically want to follow manufacturers recommendations. But like most humans are kind of set in their ways as well.

In a nutshell I think that we are splitting hairs for sure. Does all this stuff make a difference? Probably. Are we going to be able to tell? Too many variables for us and even the engineers to know for certain. Driving habits, locale, engine use and abuse, heat cycles,... You name it all of it matters and each engine and each driver is different.

@MIAZ they put Rotella T6 in mine as my first oil change. Technically it’s the wrong oil. I actually copy and retain all my service records (a habit I picked up when I used to work on airplanes) and I have the ones that say they put it in my engine. It’s happened almost every oil change…

So a friend actually owns this dealership that I go to that has done this. After a discussion about this, he said the tech sheets that specify these details don’t get updated as fast as the new vehicles are released. So if I bring a diesel Jeep in, and the tech sheets don’t reflect a diesel…. I’ll get the same oil as the other diesel vehicles like the 6.7 Cummins trucks. This is how I understand it happens.

As far as if there is a difference between the different oils. There probably isn’t a difference, and long term, it probably won’t matter. I’ve been doing oil analysis after every oil change and both oils have come out looking good. However, this dealership offers a lifetime power train warranty. If anything were to happen to my engine, I’d want to be able to prove what oils were used and when, so there is no chance of a claim denial based on using the wrong oil.

Are you saying the Cummins trucks are getting Rotella T6? They have basically the same emission equipment as the EcoD. Why would it then harm our equipment but not theirs?

That's the point, you are just as safe with Rotella T6 as with unicorn blood.

There's something else to consider and that's cost and crap FCA puts suppliers through to get the MS-12991 certifation. With the world using Shell Rotella, Shell really doesn't need the tiny niche market of FCA... and can care less, and FCA makes money.

The old adage "Follow the Money" applies here IMO.

Those are certainly all valid points of discussion and some I’ve never heard before and it certainly is nice to have a good conversation and hear the experiences and ideas of other people, isn’t this how theses forums are supposed to work , imagine, you can actually learn from other people, absolutely wonderful! So keep the information flowing and keep us informed as everyone puts more mileage on. I probably won’t rack up the mileage as fast as many do as I don’t use the Jeep as a daily driver, mostly for travel and adventures. Thanks guys!

Sorry if I missed it in this thread, but are you all able to find any of this oil at places like walmart, advance, oreilly, etc. I need to pick up a quart to top mine off. I think it used a little.

It really depends. It is not a common oil. Sometimes you can find it but most times you cannot. I feel safe by saying you probably won't find it in store at Walmart. But it's possible.

I have seen one of the Quaker State options available off the shelf at WM.

Hi. I just tried to procure some unicorn blood and was told the following:
1. It's not being made anymore. (sorry if I missed that clear statement somewhere)
2. The Mopar branded 5w-40 MS-12991 oils in the 5L or 1 quart sizes aren't available
3. Penzoil(Platinum Euro?) has been awarded the contract to supply the oil needed for the EcoDiesel.

Is Penzoil Platinum Euro the new unicorn blood?

I was told the 5L jugs are not available. The parts guy told me that the dealers are not allowed to buy in bulk due to shortages, and that specific dealer was limited to 200 gal/month. He gave me a list of other dealers in the area that had the 5L jugs so I went to one of those and bought a few. He didn't know if there was going to be a replacement or when they would be able to get an approved oil. The second dealer also confirmed that they were not allowed to buy in bulk but didn't indicate an allowed qty.
