I just spoke to Amsoil asking the same question--the product engineer swears that this meets both MS-12991 and API SN

I've been using AMSOIL in all of my vehicles since the mid 80's without any mechanical issues. I just compared the specs of this AMSOIL and the Penzoil Euro mentioned in the owners manual. The tech specs are almost identical ( viscosity at temp, flash point, etc.). All the other mfg's are listed on both (Bmw, MB, VW), except FCA. So I believe it is compatible and will be using it in my next oil change and will continue sending samples to Blackstone for analysis.

Everything said in this video is wrong. The Valvoline European Vehicle oil does not meet the 12991 spec. It's not a low ash oil, and does not meet a low ash spec for any other vehicle maker either. That's why it's cheap. Seriously - dig into it. You guys are making things up and believing off-the-cuff made-up BS from the Valvoline marketing department. The MST oil does meet the spec, but nobody I've heard of can find it these days. Good luck with your modern diesel emissions equipment. $$$$.

As a MB diesel engine owner since 2008 and follower of many oil threads on the subject, I suggest more attention to detail.

You Jeep diesel owners have not experienced it yet - too new - but soon you will, as have all others with post 2007 diesel engines of all makes - these emissions components are mutha freak'n expensive - and a pain to diagnose. $$$$

Keep it simple. Is "MS-12991" printed on the actual bottle? No? Then it's not. Done. Don't make things up. Don't look at some spec downloaded from elsewhere or some photo of the back ANOTHER oil bottle as posted a few pages back (lol). What's on the back of the bottle of the oil container with the oil you are about to pour into your engine. There is way too much confusion and BS out there otherwise.

Here we go again. Do I need to post a picture of the back of my bottle where it's stamped MS-12991? I had to do that on a Ram forum because guys wouldn't shut up arguing over it. Once I posted the picture it finally stopped. Sigh......

Also, the manual states that API category SN is "required". FCA material standard MS-12991 is "recommended". There are guys running every brand of oil on the market as long as it is proper viscosity and API SN or SN+.

You need to remove this post. You are misleading people. In the video, THE BOTTLE IS STAMPED FCA MS-12991. Why is this so hard to understand?????????

Delete this false information or I'll report it.
No it doesn’t. Prove your point and I’ll delete my post - and humbly apologize. Pic of the entire back of the bottle.

Not even the PI sheet on the Valvoline site shows it. What the specs do show is this is not a low ash oil meant for modern diesel emissions - not a single such approval from anyone. IMO, it’s you who needs to delete.

EDIT - lol - to your "Also" you added - this is what the manual actually says - even implying other specs not listed. As I posted - best of luck with your emissions. This confusion is over a decade old. A ginormous repair bill down the road helps clarify - for some at least. The "SN" spec is a who-cares - even no-name dino oil at the gas station has this spec, and it has nothing to do with diesel.

EDIT ++ ...and while you guys are at it looking for BS that needs to be deleted - here's another gem from this thread. Post back if you manage to find actual Valvoline "Advanced MST" on the market. Nobody over on the MB forums have been able to find it.

Yes, you do. Go get the bottle from your video, snap the picture, and post it. No BS from a website.

Has anyone been able to find out who makes the oil that has the Mopar part number for the Gen3 Ecodiesel?
I’ve been talking to my dealership and they are telling me that it’s Rotella T6 oil. They are still using Rotella even though Shell says that it doesn’t meet Mopar’s required specs. Here is the email replies that I’ve received from the Service Manager:

We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such as Mopar that meets FCA Material Standard MS- 12991 and the API SN engine oil category is required. Those part numbers are 68231020AA & 68231020GA.

Matt,
Please let me know what you find out. The file that you sent me states:

We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such as Mopar that meets FCA Material Standard MS- 12991 and the API SN engine oil category is required.

Shell Rotella T6 does not meet this requirement. This is what a Shell representative told me yesterday:

If the vehicle calls for a product that meet MS 12991. Our Rotella product will NOT work in the application. The only product we have that meets the spec is the Pennzoil Platinum Euro SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Motor Oil

I still don’t understand why you’re saying that Rotella T6 oil is safe and meets FCA’s requirements.

David

The part number specified there is the Rotella T6 part number
Thank you,

Matt

@Motoristx @NBB @WXman

NBB is correct, I just checked mine and it does NOT say MS 12991. It needs to be removed from the list so people like me don't incorrectly purchase it. I bought mine on Amazon.

edited it. @NBB was right. The MST is the MS 12991 where as the European one is not. Sorry about my mistake in including it.

This whole issue of using unicorn blood (MS 12991) in this frigg'n little Italian diesel is ridiculous.
Is there ANY other engines in production (other than the 1500 EcoDiesel) that has such a STRICT engine oil requirement...OR...are we as anal owners, making this a big deal???

I practically put Rotella on my cereal and just cannot imagine Rotella T6 is not totally up to the task.

The whole topic has turned into a big piss'n contest...just like ALL OIL THREADS!

If someone could get ALL the specs and post them SIDE BY SIDE we could make an intelligent and informed decision once an for all.

I don't know about the soot particulate system (and how is it SOOO much different?), but I'm sure the turbo or any component is any more picky on the 3.0 than on other modern diesel engines.

I have two more free WAVE changes before it becomes my problem and I will probably be the Guiney pig...it's gonna be Rotella-T6. Wal-Mart has it everyday for $20/gallon.

Fugg it, cover me, I'm going in. Then we can start a thread on tire pressure...Hmmm, 32.546 psi or 32.483 psi. And I ready to fight over it...rant over
