My dealership just put Rotella T6 5W-40 in mine this week. So much for following the recommendations.

Update: 10/28/20 dealer drained the oil and changed it to the right spec Mopar Oil after 6731 miles.

I was really hoping that the AMSOIL Signature Series Max-Duty Synthetic Diesel Oil 5W-40 would meet all the specifications but it seems that it doesn't have Chrysler MS-12991 or the API SN Certification

I sent Amsoil an email hoping it met spec and just hadn't been added but they said nope. What is the bother of hunting down this special oil if the dealer is gonna fill it with T6 anyway? I can get that anywhere. I'm calling my dealer tomorrow to see what they are using.

That's kinda funny. I mean, I knew dealerships were going to do this, but when it's finally confirmed, I just kinda chuckle. Yours will not be the last to get the bulk diesel oil that the dealership stocks.......

So true keep us updated on what the dealership says!
Is there a way to hand the oil to the dealership and tell them "use this" that way they dont put whatever in the engine?? My nightmare is them putting different weight oil in... The engine will run but long term issue would be guaranteed!

I will probably do my oil changes on my own.. I cant risk the dealership screwing it up! Specially for how long we been waiting to get our rigs! My wait time is 12 weeks or more :////

I've been trying to confirm if Valvoline European Vehicle 5W40 which does not have MS-12991 cert is the same oil as Valvoline MST 5W40 which does have the MS-12991 cert but I haven't been able to get Valvoline reps to respond via e-mail or social media messages.

I called my dealer today to see which oil they planned to use if I brought my 3.0 in for the change...answer was still Rotella T6. I’ll call them back tomorrow and inform them of FCA’s comment on the 5thgenrams forum about T6 causing turbo coking. I’d love to know what they’re using in Toledo.

Turbo coking could be an issue with Rotella I guess, but I think the main reason FCA moved away from it is to protect the emissions filters and equipment in the exhaust system. The MS-12991 oils are low SAPS oils.

Took mine in last Sat for an oil change. They did not have an approved oil and luckily didn’t drain it. They are using the Pennzoil Euro and had to order it. Was pleased they knew enough not to run the T6.

Probably both. Looking at the oil pressure gauge certainly validates their comment that this thing idles at seriously low pressures. I’m sure 12991 development was geared significantly toward maintaining adequate cooling and lubrication at such pressures. We can otherwise put an asterisk on most engine/exhaust related design changes and accurately state they were made with efficiency and emissions regulations in mind. It’s the story of the world now.
